My Diva Fantasy: A Hot Shell Massage at the Stillwater Spa

Okay, admit it: you saw the word “fantasy” on a Monday morning, and your mind made a beeline for the gutter. Well, fish it out (just for a minute) and read some info I got about the Stillwater Spa at the Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay.

Just in time for summer, the Stillwater Spa at the four-diamond Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay Golf Resort, Spa and Marina has introduced a treatment that evokes memories of carefree summer days spent relaxing on a warm, sandy beach. The Hot Shell Massage Treatment involves the use of smooth tiger shells as part of a continuous moving massage. Warmth from the shells is spread over the body to relieve tension and stress, and a hot oil scalp massage completes the treatment. Similar to the stones used in the popular “hot stone massage,” the shells are polished smooth, heated and used as massage tools to provide a relaxing spa experience.

“We are excited to be one of the first spas in the United States to offer the Hot Shell Massage, which is sure to be a popular option for our heat-seeking guests,” said Patti Dail, director of the Stillwater Spa. “This particular massage is a great stress reliever and also provides effective relief for those experiencing joint problems or tight muscles. The continuous movement allows heat to be spread all over the body, unlike the hot stone massage, in which heat is directed to specific points.”

The Hot Shell Massage makes use of tiger clamshells harvested by islanders in the Philippines. The shells are opened, cleaned and polished to remove imperfections, then rejoined as one. They are then gently warmed with a self-heating “lava gel” made from volcanic lava powder, kelp, sea salt and both purified and salt waters. The final product is a natural tool designed to offer the best in relaxation. The oil used in the scalp massage is infused with South Pacific extracts, filled with the aromas of green tea and mango, designed to relax muscles and rejuvenate the mind.

The 60-minute Hot Shell Massage costs $175, and is also available as a couples massage. As a complimentary gift, guests receive a take-home hot shell massage kit.

In addition to the Hot Shell Massage, the Stillwater Spa is currently featuring a series of body scrub treatments designed to recharge, uplift and invigorate the body and soul using the Bubalina product line. The first scent, Coco Lime Verbana, will be available beginning in late May. A new variety will be offered every six weeks, with scents to include coconut papaya, wild pomegranate, spicy pumpkin and Tahitian vanilla and chocolate.
