Closer to Home: Lindi Skin (review) and Hosts for Hospitals

I know everyone is looking towards New York and Fashion Week right now (woo hoo!). But I wanted to take a little time this week for a couple of Philadelphia area "locals": Lindi Skin (a company creating products for sensitive and compromised skin) and Hosts for Hospitals (an organization that addresses the housing needs of patients and families coming to the area for specialized medical care).

Lindi Skin was originally created to meet the needs of people whose skin was compromised by cancer and cancer treatment. Now their products offer luxurious, soothing skincare to everyone.

Blurb: The creation of Lindi Skin started with my experience watching friends go through cancer treatment. They expected the nausea, fatigue and hair loss associated with chemotherapy and radiation therapy, but they were not aware of the impact that these therapies would have on their skin. In discovering there was not one line of skin care products specifically developed for people with cancer, it occurred to me that someone had to create one. We have aligned with dermatologists, oncologists, nurses, patients and skincare formulators to create the first and only complete skin care line developed for the unique needs of people with cancer. Our products are elegant and luxurious so they make you feel incredible. Our formulas are unique, gentle, and soothing. We use the finest ingredients for the ultimate hydration. To help you reclaim your skin. And regain a little control over your everyday. In sickness and in health, Lindi Skin offers you skincare for life.

I decided to enlist the help of a friend to test out a few of the products. Another Nancy I know (former boss and current friend) is the Director of National Programs for Hosts for Hospitals.

Blurb: Our Purpose is to provide free lodging and support at volunteer-host homes as a caring response to the housing needs of patients and their families who come to the Greater Philadelphia area for specialized medical care. Each year, thousands of people travel to the Philadelphia area seeking medical care. Almost every patient has someone travel along to provide support. Often these people, and even the patients themselves, arrive in desperate need of convenient, inexpensive lodging. Hosts for Hospitals meets their needs through our network of volunteer host homes. Our hosts are caring people who provide a place to sleep and a feeling of home. Guests are able to return to the hospital each day refreshed and thus able to best offer support to their loved one.

Years ago, Nancy underwent cancer treatment and now has extremely sensitive skin. We each reviewed a couple of the products.

Lindi Soothing Balm

Blurb: Great for dry skin in any season, Lindi Soothing Balm comes in an attractive pump bottle to give you a dollop of moisturizing relief anytime. Originally formulated to help manage intensely dry hands and feet, Lindi Soothing Balm is a highly emollient lotion for intensely dehydrated areas of the skin. With an abundance of avocado oil, Soothing Balm is especially beneficial to painful, cracked and peeling skin. It should be used after washing with Lindi Body Wash, while skin is still damp, but can be reapplied as often as needed.

Nancy used the balm on a finger that has been giving her trouble for a long time. Her dermatologist recommended "superhydration" with a good moisturizer and Nancy found that she got the same result as the product recommended by the dermatologist.

Lindi Face Serum

Blurb: Formulated with the highest concentration of our proprietary LSA Complex ®, replete with botanicals, antioxidants and vitamins, this serum provides beneficial moisture and ultimate comfort to compromised skin on the face, neck, chest, back and scalp. The unique non-oily formula glides on silky-smooth and begins restoring immediately. Try both Lindi Face Serums—refreshingly light botanical essences of citrus or lavender. Use as often as needed; for best results apply after washing with Lindi Face Wash.

Nancy used the Serum in the evening, and also in the morning before putting on her moisturizer and makeup. Although it seemed oily on her finger, it was fine on her face and she really liked the way it penetrated into her skin.

Lindi Body Wash

Blurb: A unique daily body wash with moisturizing ingredients that cling to your skin after rinsing. You will feel the difference with this soap alternative after just one use. This gentle, non-foaming formula feels luxurious as it refreshes the body and scalp. Use as often as needed and follow with Lindi Body Lotion.

Lindi Body Lotion

Blurb: This skin-quenching lotion delivers a combination of antioxidants and hydrating ingredients that nourish the skin while reinforcing its natural barrier to prevent moisture loss. Light, refreshing and luxurious, Lindi Body Lotion is superb for all-over, everyday use. Best applied to wet or damp skin, right out of the shower.

I really loved both the body wash and lotion. "Soothing" would be too mild a term for these products..."comforting" is more like it. My skin felt pampered, soft and protected. These products aren't fragrance free; but the scent was a light and lovely citrus. My skin stayed soft and hydrated all day.

Even when everything is completely uncertain, chaotic and ridiculous (aka: now), there's always a part of me that gratefully acknowledges how many blessings I have in this life…and how lucky I am to enjoy freedom, family, friends and health. And it makes me happy that I can use my little bitty blog to talk about some local folks that are doing good things (whether it's taking care of beauty or taking care of bodies).

You can check out Hosts for Hospitals to find out about their Local Program, National Program, Volunteer opportunities or to make a donation.

And you can check out all of the great Lindi Skin products including gift ideas, special offers and educational resources on their website.

More From The Shows: Aveda and John Patrick Organic

More heavenly hair! Girliness really seems to be everywhere (um…yay). This time the show is John Patrick Organic and the hair is Aveda. Read on (and look at the pretty pictures)…

Aveda Trend Report Notes

Show: John Patrick Organic
Lead Hair: Odile Gilbert for Aveda
Aveda Lead: Dennis Clendennen, Dionysus, The Woodlands, Texas

The Look: The hair look for John Patrick Organic is a modern, playful take on Bohemian-chic. Hair is smooth and shiny on top with soft, free-flowing curls below the cheekbone and volume at the front—pulled back into a barrette, adding a girly touch.

Get the Look/Step-by-Step:
Step 1: Prep hair with Aveda Phomollient™ Styling Foam to add body, volume, and shine.
Step 2: Brush hair through and create a deep side part.
Step 3: Divide hair into three sections: bottom, sides/top and middle, and secure in place with hair clips. Spray each section generously with Aveda Air Control™ Hair Spray for shine and hold.
Step 4: Starting with the nape of the neck, curl small sections of hair using a 1 inch barrel curling iron. Once curled, roll each piece into a loop using your index finger, and hold in place with a single-pronged hair clip. Continue curling hair, working around the sides toward the top of the head, leaving a one inch piece of hair untouched. Spray each curl with Aveda Air Control™ Hair Spray for added hold.
Step 5: Curl the one inch piece of hair forward and secure with a single-pronged hair clip to allow the hair to cool.
Step 6: With the exception of the front curl, remove all hair clips and brush curls through to create soft, full waves.
Step 7: Rub Aveda Light Elements™ Shaping Wax between palms and smooth over the top of hair to reduce flyaways and add shine. Hair is now smooth from crown to cheekbones becoming full, loose curls.
Step 8: Remove clip from top curl and twist slightly to create volume and lift in front. Secure hair in place with two small hair pins, and then pull back with a larger barrette that matches hair color. Spray Aveda Air Control™ Hair Spray directly on the lifted section of hair to add volume and hold.
Step 9: Finish the look with a final misting of Aveda Air Control™ Hair Spray.

Aveda Products Used:

Aveda Phomollient™ Styling Foam
Aveda Air Control™ Hair Spray
Aveda Light Elements™ Shaping Wax

Odile Gilbert Quotes:

Q: What was your inspiration for this look? How did you collaborate with the designer to create the look?
A: “I call this chic-bohemian look ‘the wave.’ Patrick was inspired by a photograph taken in the Krazy Kat Club in the 1920’s, where the girls embodied a “wholesome Bohemia” full of enthusiasm and creative spirit. We worked together to translate this inspiration into a look for the seductive, modern girl who attends private speakeasies. She is distinctive, intellectual, and very pretty—yet fun-loving and young.”

Q: How could a woman achieve this look on her own?
A: “This look is gorgeous and easy to recreate for day or evening. Prep hair with Aveda Phomollient™ Styling Foam and create a deep side part. Spray hair with Aveda Air Control™ Hair Spray and curl with a one-inch barrel curling iron. Brush through to create soft, full waves. Smooth the top of hair with Aveda Light Elements™ Shaping Wax to tame flyaways and achieve a smooth, modern finish. Lastly, twist the front curl back and secure with a barrette, adding Air Control™ Hair Spray for volume and hold.”

John Patrick Organic Quotes:

Q: What is the inspiration for your collection? What is the look you are capturing?
A: “This season, I wanted to dig deep below the surface of Bohemian style, and create a free-spirited look that’s chic, pretty, and fresh. I was inspired by a photograph taken at the Krazy Kat Club in the 1920’s and sought to create of a dressy, “wholesome Bohemia,” defined by artistic endeavor and intellectual pursuit. The collection is bright and optimistic—true Bohemians are enthusiasts. It features a mix-match of happy, classic Bohemia and chic, wear-anywhere utility pieces. The mix-and-match strategy is signature Organic, but shows my wholesome, Bohemian point-of-view. What’s Bohemia without self-expression?”

Q: You have made a real effort to “green” your show this season. How do you feel about this accomplishment?
A: “I’m thrilled to be ‘greening’ the backstage with Aveda. There’s nothing about going green that doesn’t feel good.”

Serious Pretty: The Perfect Pretty Process DVD

When we're not busy ogling all the new looks this week; sooner or later we have to put on our own makeup. Just got some info about a new DVD being released: "The Perfect Pretty Process" (btw: serious style points for that title).

Terri Apanasewicz (clients include Cindy Crawford, Gisele Bundchen and Miley Cyrus) is giving us a big how-to with her new DVD. "The Perfect Pretty Process" is her special method of makeup application. Read on…

New DVD teaches every woman to put her best face forward
Celebrity makeup artist's Perfect Pretty Process reveals professional techniques

At last, every woman can be privy to the secret of flawless makeup application that gives celebrities and supermodels their glow.

Terri Apanasewicz, whose client list includes Cindy Crawford, Gisele Bundchen, Miley Cyrus and numerous others, brings her professional know-how to women everywhere with her new DVD “The Perfect Pretty Process.” The Perfect Pretty Process is a special method of makeup application that will have every woman looking and feeling like the star she is.

The Perfect Pretty Process DVD allows anyone, regardless of economic or social stature, to be a personal client of Apanasewicz. And, as her celebrity clients will attest, that's a good thing.

“Terri Apanasewicz is one of the most talented makeup artists I've worked with. She knows how to enhance each person's best features. Terri also has a calm and relaxed confidence when she applies makeup that makes the whole experience more enjoyable,” said Ming-Na, who is starring in the Sci-Fi Channel's upcoming Stargate Universe. “When you find a treasure like Terri, you are smart enough not to let it go. Terri is the one I want on a photo shoot or a press junket. And she was there on one of the most important days of my life – to do my wedding makeup! With Terri, I know I will look my best,” said Bridgette Wilson-Sampras.

Apanasewicz created The Perfect Pretty Process and established P3 Beauty.com so that busy moms, businesswomen, students, and others could have access to the makeup tips and techniques usually reserved for superstars.

The Perfect Pretty Process DVD reveals, step-by-step, how to use and put on makeup so that it enhances each woman's unique beauty. Four women of different ethnicities and backgrounds – a business owner, an actress, an editor, and an artist – demonstrate the process while Apanasewicz explains just what to do and when. While each of the women is lovely in her own way without makeup, their (unretouched) transformation using the Perfect Pretty Process is amazing.

“I am excited about the positive feedback we've gotten from P3 Beauty clients,” said Apanasewicz. “They say knowing the Perfect Pretty Process has changed how they feel about themselves and how others see them. This is what women have been asking for for a long time.”

“I've bought so many different products, taken them home, and then not known what to do with them. With the P3 process, I now know how to apply makeup in a way that makes me look my best,” said Zulma Ticas, a business owner.

Gillian Abshire, a registered nurse, loves that the P3 Beauty process and products fit her hectic lifestyle. “P3 beauty taught me how to do a professional job in five to 10 minutes,” she said. “P3 Beauty makes it so easy for a very busy working mom. It’s portable, it’s quick, and it’s easy!”

As one P3 Beauty client knows, a woman's beauty is not just skin deep. There's a significant connection between inner vitality and outward appearance. “I used to look and feel like such a mess,” said Silvia Alvarado, an entrepreneur. “Now I'm told that I always look so pulled together. Thanks to P3 Beauty, I feel so much more confident.”

From the beach to the red carpet, Apanasewicz transports each of her celebrity clients to a new level of beauty. Now, she can do that for every woman who wants to put her best face forward.

The Perfect Pretty Process will be available in early September 2009 for $29.95 plus shipping and handling.

Run With It! Nike+ Runner’s Gift Pack

Okay, this isn’t something you slather on your face, but fitness can also be a big part of the pretty. Here is an awesome gift (or keeper) for any avid runner.

Nike+ Runner’s Gift Pack

The perfect gift for the runner in your life, the Nike+ Runner's Gift Pack lets them track their progress on their iPod® nano, while listening to their tunes. Simply drop the Nike+ sensor into any Nike+ running shoe and get instant voice feedback of time, distance, calories burned and pace through the headphones. - $100 NIKE Gift Card (For a new pair of running shoes, perhaps?)

You get all the information on your distance, pace, time and calories burned. The info comes immediately through your headphones while you run, and the sensor connects to your iPod nano; so you can upload your runs to nikeplus.com and set goals, review progress, get training programs, etc. Super cool!

It’s also a great value - included in the pack is a Nike Gift card! There’s a also large version which includes an 8GB iPod® nano (with video thank-you-very-much). Check it out on the on the Nike website,

New from Origins: GinZing™ Refreshing Eye Cream

Read what I got from the folks at Origins. A new brightening and depuffing eye cream. Oooh…My tired, puffy little peepers are dying to try this out!

OPEN YOUR TIRED EYES TO A NATURAL WAKE-UP CALL
Origins Introduces Nature’s Clinically-Proven Morning-Rescue Eye Cream
NEW! GinZing™ Refreshing eye cream to brighten and de-puff

Late night? Long flight? Run down? No one else needs to know! Origins now offers a remedy to offset the visible signs of fatigue around eyes. GinZing™ Refreshing eye cream to brighten and de-puff is nature’s clinically-proven morning-rescue eye cream that instantly reduces dark circles. In a recent consumer study 86% of participants felt skin around the eye area was brighter and more radiant looking! Origins proprietary complex of Panax Ginseng, Caffeine from Coffee Bean, Magnolia Extract, and natural optic brighteners rapidly wakes up, refreshes and restores radiance to eyes.

Like a shot of espresso for tired eyes, this power-packed eye cream delivers both an instant impact and sustained benefits over time. GinZing™ Refreshing eye cream is formulated with a cool, crème texture that invigorates and hydrates the eye area, helping unsightly bags and under-eye puffiness virtually disappear. Vibrancy is restored, leaving the delicate eye-area appear rested, even-toned and revitalized.

“GinZing™ Refreshing eye cream utilizes a combination of plant ingredients and vitamins to help wake- up eyes for a rejuvenated and luminous appearance,” explains Dr. Lieve Declercq, Origins Global Spokesperson of Plant Physiology and Molecular Biology. “It brings immediate relief to the eye area, reviving it with a blend of botanicals and brightening optics that act like a jolt of energy.”

Powered By Nature

At the heart of this eye cream is Panax Ginseng, an adaptogenic herb with a 7,000 year history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine to balance energy, as well as aid the body and mind. In GinZing™ Refreshing eye cream, Panax Ginseng is used to reduce visible signs of fatigue. It also works along with two ingredients, Hesperidin and Coleus Barbatus, to combat puffiness. Hesperidin, whose natural components are derived from oranges, provides anti-irritation benefits. Coleus Barbatus, a botanical that is member of the mint family, helps visibly rid the eyes of excess baggage.

Caffeine derived from Coffee Bean works as an anti-irritant to help soothe delicate skin around eyes, while Cucumber Extract treats the skin with calming benefits so eyes look visibly well-rested. Magnolia Extract combats dark circles by helping to prevent irritation, and optic brighteners, including Silica and Mica, help diffuse darkness and illuminate under-eye skin.

Skin that is tired and fatigued can also look uneven, dull and rough. To combat these symptoms, GinZing™ Refreshing eye cream utilizes Chestnut Seed Extract to desquamate dull surface cells. Apple and Cucumber Extracts brighten skin around the eye area.

Overall vibrancy and radiance are boosted with an essential B-Vitamin Complex. Cordyceps Sinensis works to “up” energy reserves so that skin can respond to stress and still look healthy and glowing. Powerful anti-irritants and anti-oxidants, Yeast Extract, Green Tea and Vitamins C & E, further protect against stressors.

To help keep skin soft, supple and hydrated, natural moisturizers including Shea Butter, Trehalose and Plant Glycerin replenish reservoirs of hydration.

Proven By Science

In an eight-week clinical study (completed in May 2009) GinZing™ Refreshing eye cream to brighten and de-puff was proven to immediately:
• improve moisturization by 68%
• improve radiance by 38%

In an eight-week sensory study (completed in May 2009) of GinZing™ Refreshing eye cream to brighten and de-puff:
• 98% of test panelists reported skin around eyes feeling instantly hydrated
• 90% felt it left skin around eyes with a smoother appearance
• 88% said it left their overall appearance refreshed
• 82% said it helps rejuvenate appearance of fatigued skin
• 80% reported a reduction in puffiness

GinZing™ Refreshing eye cream to brighten and de-puff will be available October 2009 at Origins Retail Stores, select Department Stores and
www.ORIGINS.com.

Fashion Week: Fekkai

Hope you guys are all having a great time at Fashion Week (either live or long-distance)! Of course, Frederic Fekkai is all over Fashion Week again and rocking the runway hair (I am dying over the Rag and Bone look).

Saturday: Alice + Olivia

“The hair for Alice+Olivia is a crossroads of edgy and girly; we created a look for funky, confident women” – Frederic Fekkai

Andre Rodman, lead stylist for Frédéric Fekkai added a fun, punky edginess to the sweet, girly looks at the Alice + Olivia show. To get the look Rodman twirled crimped hair around a double barreled iron in a figure eight pattern. He then pulled the front piece to the side, smoothed it with Fekkai Coiff™ Magnifique Ultra-Light Finishing Crème and secured it neatly with jeweled pins.

Products Used:
Fekkai Coiff™ Contrôle Ironless Straightening Balm: A miraculous, non-chemical balm that provides weightless straightening while you blow dry. This creamy balm contains special featherweight silicones for sleek, chic hair that resists frizz and fly-aways. This balm delivers a salon-like blow-out, sans stylist.

Fekkai Coiff™ Magnifique Ultra-Light Finishing Crème: This airy soufflé-like formula floats through layers to add definition and style. Simply “rake” crème through the hair concentrating on the ends to whip hair into its softest, sexiest shape.

Fekkai Full Blown Volume Lifting Hairspray - This lightweight formula holds volume to lift the roots and delivers powerful fullness that is never stiff or sticky.

Friday: Rag & Bone

Teddy Charles, lead stylist for Frédéric Fekkai, created a rough and tousled look full of texture and volume for the Rag & Bone Spring 2010 show. After a few spritzes of Fekkai Tousled Wave Spray he rolled hair to make it piecey. He then wrapped and teased the hair into messy tendrils with Fekkai Full Blown Volume Lifting Hairspray. He completed the look with the Fekkai Au Natural Dry Shampoo to create a matte finish.

Fekkai Coiff Océanique Tousled Wave Spray - Create a tousled, wavy look with this lightweight styling mist. Touchable polymers help to form and rejuvenate waves with flexible control.

Fekkai Full Blown Volume Lifting Hairspray - This lightweight formula holds volume to lift the roots and delivers powerful fullness that is never stiff or sticky.

Fekkai Au Naturel Powder Clean Dry Shampoo: This naturally formulated product free of sulfates, parabens, dyes and synthetic fragrances, gently cleanses hair with a natural botanical blend, infuses hair with conditioning ingredients, removes excess oil and builds volume. Hair is left refreshed and revived without the use of water.

About Frédéric Fekkai: the ultimate in luxury hair care - was developed by Frédéric to meet the exacting standards of his A-list clientele, and to address the specific needs of different hair types. Before his products are marketed to the public, Frédéric and his staff test every formula in his world-renowned Frédéric Fekkai Salons to ensure the highest quality and performance. In addition to providing exceptional results, Fekkai products feature luxurious textures and refreshing, invigorating scent.

Je Me Sens Tres Jolie! YSL Fard À Lèvres Rouge Pur (review)

More fabulatiousness from Yves Saint Laurent today. I've been a fiend for lipsticks all summer (especially reds). And even after months of trying out gorgeous lipstick after gorgeous lipstick, YSL has still managed to completely wow me.

Fard À Lèvres Rouge Pur (Pure Lipstick)

Blurb: Lip colour and care in one, Rouge Pur stays fresh for hours while ensuring hydration and protection to the lips. Available in a sensational range of shades.

I am in freaky love with these - the blurb doesn't even come close to the goodness. Highly pigmented, creamy colors that glide on and feel absolutely weightless. And they look stunning – full coverage lipstick with a lovely sheen. They also last like you wouldn't believe - eating, drinking, talking, singing, whatever. And when the lipstick finally does rub off, there's still color left behind on the lips. I tried two:

Purple Velvet (#140): A juicy, lush purple with lots of red undertones. This is a departure from my usual cooler purples, and I love it. It's vibrant, but still sophisticated.

Opium Red (#131): I don't even know where to start with this color. This is the kind of drop-dead, gorgeous red that could only come from a French company. A warm, deep, velvety shade that flatters almost every skin tone. Sexy, voluptuous and decadent. Sigh!

There are over 40 colors to choose from and each comes in a beautiful, chic gold tube that will make you want to touch up at the table (of course you probably won't need to). YSL is available on their website, Sephora and fine department stores like Nordstrom and Saks.

Happy Friday!

I Feel Delicious: Almond Pie Rich Soufflé Lotion (review)

Since I'm trying to reign in my sweet tooth this week, I have of course become obsessed with this body moisturizer from Votre Vu.

Tarte D'Amande Soufflé Riche Pour Le Corps (Almond Pie Rich Soufflé Lotion for the Body)

Blurb: Treat yourself to Tart D'Amande Soufflé day or night for luxurious moisture protection that's never heavy or greasy, just divine. Almond Pie exudes a warm fragrance, rich with coveted and healthy ingredients to treat your whole body. Vitamins and tropical nut oils provide the ultimate in hydrated and sensuously silky skin. While rich with fatty acids and decadent aroma, there are no calories to be gained here. Guiltlessly dive into a big scoop of absolute deliciousness, and those lucky enough to be near you will savor the pleasure too. Apply liberally to the body and massage until absorbed. Perfect to wear anywhere! 0% Guilt. 100% Pleasure. Be Delicious.

Here's my well thought out, intelligent, helpful review: Yummmmmm.

Instead of splurging at the bakery, I am splurging on body care…and this moisturizer is thoroughly splurge-worthy. (Actually, you get a pretty big jar…7 oz.) The ingredients include Macadamia Oil, Vital, Grape Seed Oil, Shea Butter, Coconut Oil and Cerasome A and E. It definitely feels more like a cream than a lotion. A really good cream. A really rich, luxurious, velvety cream that smells like coconut and almonds. Which meant my skin became luxurious and velvety and smelled like coconut and almonds.

Again…yummmmmm. Did I really need to do that? No, that was extra.

Even the website is a delicious, luxurious experience. Take a look at the additional info, videos, and a to die for product listing.

Endless Summer (sort of): Dr. Adrienne Denese

It may be after Labor Day, but there's still some summer left. In the interests of prolonging the lazy, hazy, crazy (whatever) days of summer; here's some info from Anti-Aging Expert, Dr. Adrienne Denese. You can't actually make summer last longer, but these tips will help you keep your summer complexion. You may begin reading at any time…

How-to maintain post summer radiance by Anti-aging Expert Dr. Adrienne Denese

Step 1: Exfoliate
Product Suggestion: Dr. Denese Advanced Firming Facial Pads

It is important to get rid of dead skin cells; they are what make your skin look dead and old. They have a rough texture so they block out skin’s natural radiance and that natural glow
If you self tan, you need a freshly exfoliated canvas. Otherwise the self tan will come out to be blotchy. This applies for face and body alike. Many of us use minimal make up in the summer so we can’t hide dull, sallow, tired looking skin anymore.

Step 2: Moisturize
Product Suggestion: Dr. Denese HydroShield Ultra Moisturizing Face Serum

In the summer it is very important to protect the skin from dehydration which kills skin cells.
Air conditioning is one of your skin’s worst enemies. It takes out the humidity in the hair and dries your skin. You must protect your skin from moisture loss which damages skin by moisturizing once a day.

Step 3: Bronze
Product Suggestion: Dr. Denese Glow Younger Self Tanner

Few of us realize that every real sun tan we get during the summer will translate into several actual permanent lines on our face. Try a non streak self-tanner. Some self tanners are so advanced and so different from all other self tanners on the market that it truly gives you the look of an actual tan.

Step 4: Protect
Product Suggestion: Dr. Denese SPF 30 Defense Day Cream

All dermatologists would agree that the single worst enemy of your skin is the Sun. Nearly everything that you do not like about your skin: lines, wrinkles, age spots, enlarged pores, loss of firmness, red capillaries on your nose and cheek, loss of elasticity, all has to do with cumulative sun exposure. Daily SPF 30 broad spectrum protection is imperative, even if it rains.

I Feel Girly: Peony Splash Fragrance from Coach (review)

So I guess I'm a little late to the party with this one; but I finally opened my adorable bottle of Peony Splash from Coach and spritzed.

Last Spring, Coach launched three floral-inspired body splashes (Peony, Freesia and Iris). All three are super feminine, light and fresh.

Peony Splash is all about the sweetness of honeysuckle and the luxury of peonies. Since I don't wear much fragrance, it took me a while to get around to trying this; but I think I'll be taking advantage of the remaining warm weather and finding places to wear it. What I love is that it's unabashedly girly. Pink box, pink bottle and notes of raspberry and guava nectar right next to honeysuckle, rose, jasmine and peony. And to keep it from being overly precious, the dry down notes of sandalwood and cedarwood add warmth and depth.

Just in case I haven't made myself clear: this is serious, strappy sandals, summer dresses, bat your eyelashes, feminine. Awesome.

You can visit Coach's Fragrance and Beauty and check out their other fragrances, glosses and ultra glamorous coach cosmetics cases. Girleeeeee…

Tuesday TLC: Pangea Organics Hand and Body Lotions (review)

Hope you all had a great holiday! My Labor Day weekend was thoroughly awesome. I got so much done and still had time to watch an episode of Mad Men (I’m almost caught up). I sang, connected with an old friend, hung out with a new friend, helped another friend move, met some new people, cleaned/organized my apartment, did laundry, sang some more, went to lunch, went to dinner, worked on old projects and tried some new things. I had more fun than any girl has a right to.

Hafta say, though, that all the activity has left me more than a little tired this morning. I’m feeling seriously happy that I got so much done; but I’m also feeling seriously spanked.

Which means…a fine opportunity to review lovely therapeutic products from Pangea Organics. Specifically, their Hand and Body Lotions.

Blurb: GO AHEAD, RUB IT IN. Every drop is natural, hydrating, therapeutic, hand crafted and organic. That’s right. Pangea Organics is a feel good kind of company in more ways than one.

Indian Lemongrass with Rosemary
Mind: rejuvenating / Body: refreshing
For oil-rich & combo skin
Detoxifying, Stimulating, Deodorizing, Revitalizing, Distressing, Clarifying

Chilean Red Clover with Geranium & Grapefruit
Mind: uplifting / Body: balancing
For balanced & thirsty skin
Soothing, Calming, Antioxidant, Toning, Rejuvenating, Uplifting, Detoxifying, Clearing, Joyful

I am loving this company and especially loving these lotions! Just reading the bottle puts me in a good place. These lotions are soothing and unbelievably kind to skin. They feel great, absorb quickly and leave my skin velvety soft and supple. I’m also really into their unique fragrances. They’re herbal, complicated and exotic, but not at all heavy. The fragrance is strong at first, then fades into a barely-there natural scent. The Indian Lemon Grass is usually my favorite, but today I'm into the Chilean Red Clover.

Check out the website and peruse their Skincare, Bodycare, Lipcare and Handcare. Right now you can also try their new Radiance Gift Set and save 40%.

Wash Up: 13 Soap Unlucky for Dirt from LUSH

It is now officially after Labor Day. Time to put away your white shoes (especially if you’re a man) and start thinking about the fall. Fall makeup, fall scents, fall colors…and time to start getting back in the habit of taking good health precautions as flu season approaches (of course, I’m positive none of you lovely readers have even fallen out of the habit…this is for your “friends”).

And I’ll be darned if the folks at LUSH haven’t managed to turn something as tedious as hand washing and flu prevention into a lovely pampering experience. Their new soap contains fabulous antibacterial, anti-fungal, anti-everything-bad oregano oil. Once again, LUSH, you rock. Please read the info I got (all of it – not just the fun parts)…

Handwashing 101: bar vs. liquid soap

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), washing hands is the single most important act to help stop the spread of disease and stay healthy. That’s because, 80% of all infections may be transmitted through our hands. In an interview today about an inevitable influx of swine cases this fall, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said that, “the best thing we can all do are the very simple things, the washing of the hands, the coughing into the sleeve.” With flu scares increasing and kids heading back to school, the greatest way to fight disease is to go back to basics.

An ancient remedy for fighting disease, oregano oil is a naturally powerful antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, and antiparasitic and has been proven to break down “super bugs.” In 2004, Georgetown University released a report that it destroys antibiotic-resistant super germs such as the MRSA virus, which kills at least 12,000/year, mostly hospital staff. Do what nurses do and find a soap that uses oregano oil, such as LUSH Cosmetics’ new 13 Soap Unlucky for Dirt, for its natural, helpful properties.

Bar soap is more hygienic than liquid because it does not contain water, which is a breeding ground for bacteria. Bar soap naturally fights off bacteria as opposed to liquid soap that has to be contained in environmentally damaging plastic bottles.

The act of washing hands is essential because according to the CDC, an estimated 40 million adults get sick from germs transmitted on dirty hands (yuck!). It is vital to wash hands for at least 20 seconds (sing Happy Birthday twice), but it is just as important to use a bar of soap. A bar of soap physically removes bacteria and other germs off skin and hands.

If you follow these basic tips and the others lectured by your mother, such as “Keep your hands out of your mouth,” “Stop rubbing your eyes” and “Don’t touch that” you should be safe and healthy this cold and flu season.

Proven Performance from the Drugstore: Olay, Pantene & Clairol

Lately I have been so gratified by some of the amazing values available in the beauty world. Of course I crave all of the amazing prestige beauty products that are out there; but this year has been a financial roller coaster, so I'm deeply appreciating the tried and true (and affordable) drugstore options.

I just got some great information (and stuff to try out) from the Proctor & Gamble beauty lines and I can’t wait to test them out and report back. I have a lot of confidence in P&G. I’ve been a fan of Pantene; and a while back, I was blown away by Olay Pro-X.

Instead of the latest launches; I’ll be checking out a few items that already have excellent track records: Olay Regenerist, Pantene Full & Thick and Clairol Perfect 10. These products have been tested by experts, won a bunch of awards and have really performed like crazy. It takes a while to test everything out and write about it; so in the meantime, I’d love to hear comments from any of you out there in Beauty Land.

Happy Tuesday!
