Fragrant Dash: Soap and Paper Factory Solid Perfumes (review)

Another dash because I have to rush out to an event tonight. Which is a perfect excuse to write about one of my new favorite go-to on-the-go products. From The Soap & Paper Factory.

Solid Perfume (in "Gardenia," "Jasmine," and "Midnight")

Blurb: Our beautiful solid perfumes are a sexy way to fragrance yourself. Just apply to your pulse points as often as you wish, or dig deep and use as a pomade (because it's great for your hair). Pure jojoba, beeswax and signature fragrances make this an elegant way to fragrance yourself every minute of the day! This is our best selling item!

Three of these little fabulous, heavenly scents are waiting in my purse right now. As soon as I post this review; I’m going to open up one of the pretty, portable, re-usable tins and apply one of these wonderful fragrances to my pulse points. I may even smooth a little bit in my hair.

Too much information? I think not. (I am a blogger after all.) The point is that solid fragrances are genuinely awesome. Perfume in solid form won’t spill or leak; and it’s perfect for purse, desk drawer, gym bag, etc.

And…they smell heavenly! There are 14 perfumes to choose from, and each is handcrafted with essential oils, jojoba and beeswax (and without parabens, phthalates, or petrochemicals). “Gardenia” is a very potent, slightly spicy scent (known to be an aphrodisiac). “Jasmine” is absolutely gorgeous, sweet, rich and very feminine. Lately, I’ve been seriously loving jasmine-scented anything, and “Midnight” is probably my hands down favorite. It was inspired by a specific jasmine patch in San Francisco (my homeland); and it’s a slightly subtler, sweeter version of the Jasmine scent. It’s unbelievably gorgeous (and mighty sexy if you ask me).

Visit the website to learn about the other 11 scents, and take a look at the Patch NYC collection while you’re there. If you feel like letting your nose do the browsing, click on the store listing page. Soap & Paper Factory products are also available at Barney's New York, anthropologie, C.O. Bigelow, and BeautyHabit.

Wednesday Appreciation Day: CLEAN Cotton T-Shirt Eau de Parfum (review)

Why am I appreciating Wednesday? Mainly because I was in a thoroughly excellent mood all day. It started out wonderfully, and stayed that way. And even though it was busy, I still kept finding myself smiling and appreciating little things all day long. So since I’m being all appreciative, I thought I’d feature a scent that also put me in a good mood. From CLEAN.

Cotton T-Shirt Eau de Parfum

Blurb: As cool, crisp, and comfortable as a freshly laundered tee, this airy light scent is an easy, feel-good favorite. CLEAN Cotton T-Shirt blends the crisp notes of citrusy bergamot and the fluffy notes of Cotton Flower to create a fresh and simple scent that captures the appeal of the iconic tee. Teasing traces of rosewood and warm musk add a familiar warmth, just like the boyfriend tee shirt you love to steal.

This is a huge departure from fragrances I usually wear; but I have to admit I could seriously get used to it. When I was a teenager in Southern California, we used to buy Jockey men’s v-neck tee’s (3 for $10) to wear with our jeans during the summer. This scent reminded me a little bit of those days. It really smells like freshly washed cotton, sunshine, ease and…happiness. And thinking about wearing a guy's freshly washed cotton shirt is a mighty good thing too.

The bergamot and cotton flower are most prominent at the beginning; and as it dries down, the warmer notes of rosewood and musk come through. It’s light, crisp, clean, kind of sexy and comforting all at the same time. (Awww.) And it’s a wonderful daytime fragrance for spring or summer.

Right now, the website is under construction; but you can still shop CLEAN at Sephora.

I’m sharing this clip from youtube because today I found a new appreciation for another old favorite. I’ve probably heard this song hundreds of times; but today was the first time I realized how truly awesome the guitar solo is. See if you don’t agree (you can listen to the entire song, or just jump to 4:20 for the guitar solo).

Happy Autumn Appreciation Day: NEW Estée Lauder Sensuous Noir (review)

Before you start firing up the Google; I should tell you that there isn’t really an official Autumn Appreciation Day. I just made it up (so what else is new?). I’ve been going through the gloomy “Summer is Over” phase; and about 45 minutes ago, I suddenly got all happy that Autumn is here. Outside it’s dark and crisp, and I’m sitting in my snug apartment enjoying the coziness.

I’m thinking about Halloween costumes, hot cocoa, pretty leaves, cozy comforters, more hot cocoa, stockings and high heels, rich colors, hot baths before bed time, and…cocoa. Besides an excuse to enjoy chocolate in liquid form, Autumn is also a sensuous time. Nights are longer and darker, and the chilly air makes everyone want to get a little bit closer. How about we talk about a sensuous fragrance then? Here’s one from Estée Lauder.

Sensuous Noir Eau de Parfum Spray

Blurb: Sensuous after dark. The ultimate in sensuality. Feminine. Intensely rich. Mysteriously seductive. A deep heart of Molten Woods, Creme Noir and Patchouli, surrounded by rich florals including Spiced Lily, Purple Rose and other night-blooming florals. Like the soft seductive curves of a feminine silhouette, Estée Lauder Sensuous Noir embodies the warm, fluid sensuality of the woman who wears it.

This is a lovely fragrance for welcoming in the longer darker nights of Autumn. This fragrance is luxurious, soft, dark, sensual and feminine – with a nice bit of spice. The purple rose and jasmine are very prominent in the beginning, and are set off by a spicy whiff of black pepper. It’s a little bit intoxicating, and then it begins to warm up. The heady swirl settles down, and the darker, more earthy notes of the patchouli and melted woods start to come through. Finally the warm, creamy notes of the amber and vanilla and appear with more of the florals.

It’s really lovely. What I like most about this scent is the combination of femininity, mystery and earthiness.

You can read more details on the website. And you can check out what's new and visit the promotions page. Estée Lauder is also sold in fine department stores.

I’m going to keep the celebration going for another 6 minutes and 12 seconds with the help of Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong. Have a listen…

Miss Crankypants Needs A Pick-Me-Up: Pacifica California Star Jasmine Perfume Roll-On (review)

Yup, I’m afraid that Little Miss Crankypants is back today. After a fabulous vacation weekend, I spent the day trying to get caught up...and then realized about an hour ago that I’m not going to get everything done that I wanted. Grrr. Of course it has nothing to do with the fact that I overscheduled myself. And sleeping late has nothing to do with it either. The fact that I’m behind schedule is entirely the fault of everything…except me.

Okay, that little burst of immaturity actually made me feel better. But I still want to eat an entire cake. Instead I’m going to take a big girl pill, and cheer myself up more constructively by talking about something that just smells yummy and cheerful. From Pacifica.

California Star Jasmine Perfume Roll-On

Blurb: Brook Harvey-Taylor, the perfumer and founder of Pacifica, created this fragrance as a love note to the Southern California neighborhood where she grew up. This sunny perfume blends the laid-back beauty of jasmine with the subtle earthiness of driftwood freshly washed onto the shore. Bright notes of orange playfully emerge at the top. This portable, affordable, adorable luxury is 100% vegan and not animal tested.

This perfume is perfect for adding some sunshine to a day that isn’t going so well. It has a wonderful Jasmine fragrance combined with earthy driftwood and bright citrus notes. It’s lovely, relaxed and cheerful. I also love that it comes in a little purse-friendly roll-on. It’s great to have throughout the day when cheer is needed…frequently.

Take a look at the website. There are all kinds of soaps, body products and candles to de-stress any day. There’s a nice special values section, and you can also visit Brook's Blog. Also, when you subscribe to their email updates, you’ll be automatically entered to win a $100 gift certificate. Pacifica products are also available at Sephora.

Happy Monday!

Winsome Wednesday: Liz Earle Botanical Essence No. 1 (review)

Yes, I did just use the word "winsome." It means "charming, appealing, charismatic…" you get the picture. (I could have used any of those words, but I picked the one that began with a "W.") After all the craziness yesterday, I felt today would be a nice day for some charm. In fragrance form. From Liz Earle.

Botanical Essence™ Eau De Parfum No.1

Blurb: For our first ever bespoke fragrance, we’ve used the finest natural botanical ingredients from around the world and the expert skills of a distinguished perfumer from Grasse, France. We gave him the time to indulge in this age-old art, skilfully hand-crafting this complex scent with true passion to create a vibrant, sparkling fragrance translating into warmth and sensuality – and it’s just won its first two UK awards. Over 98% directly derived from natural ingredients, this sensuous fragrance can be worn every day. Spritz generously all over any time your spirits need a boost.

Since Liz Earle is a skincare company (a fabulous one); I wasn't sure what to expect. I imagined it would resemble some of their bath/body care more than an actual stand alone fragrance. Not at all – it's a wonderful, fresh, summery Eau De Parfum!

It begins with lots of crisp, bright lemon and mandarin notes (with a hint of musk). After a few moments, it dries down to a warmer scent that showcases the blend of herbal and floral notes. It's really gorgeous. What also wowed me was the fact that it's made from 98% natural ingredients, yet still lasted well into the day. And as more time went by, the fragrance became warmer and earthier, and a little more of the rose peeked through. Thoroughly charming!

The Eau De Parfum is launching in the U.S. this summer. You can register here to be notified when it arrives (and right now it's available on the U.K. website here). And if you need to do some general browsing, visit the U.S. website (and check out the Summer Newsletter).

New (Again) In June: Jo Malone Re-Launches White Tie & Tiara Cologne

More beauty news from Jo Malone London! They're re-launching one of their most memorable summer fragrances. White Tie & Tiara first launched in 2008 (designed exclusively to support the Elton John AIDS Foundation). It's a summer scent inspired by Elton John's and David Furnish's "White Scented Garden" (and named after the White Tie and Tiara Ball held every June at their Windsor home).

White Tie & Tiara 2010
Designed exclusively to support the Elton John AIDS Foundation

The World of Jo Malone™ introduces White Tie & Tiara, a limited edition fragrance designed exclusively to support the Elton John AIDS Foundation. White Tie & Tiara is inspired by the beautiful 'White Scented Garden' at Sir Elton John and David Furnish’s Windsor home, and is named after the White Tie and Tiara Ball, held every June in the grounds.

Combining the scent of summer flowers with a sparkling infusion of fruit, this elegant fragrance blends delicate jasmine, orange blossom, and white violets with hints of pineapple, tangerine and bergamot.

Designed at its inception to benefit the Elton John AIDS Foundation, White Tie & Tiara was initially unveiled at the Ball as a cologne and scented candle. Due to its popularity, the scent will now available at Jo Malone boutiques. Each purchase of White Tie & Tiara 2010 supports Jo Malone's donation of £150,000 to the Elton John AIDS Foundation, which has prioritised its key programmes in Cambodia and Malawi, helping over 25,000 children infected with the HIV virus or orphaned because of AIDS, as beneficiaries of this donation.

Fragrance Combining™ Tips

Create your own bespoke, signature scent. Jo Malone’s unique philosophy of Fragrance Combining™ lets you combine fragrances to best suit your mood and bring to life your own personal White Tie & Tiara story.

To create a scent that evokes the warmth of sunlight across a garden of white flowers, combine White Tie & Tiara with Grapefruit. The aromatic notes of grapefruit, tangerine and rosemary bring a soft and sensual, uplifting effect to the scent of delicate, fresh flowers.

Alternatively, the combination of White Tie & Tiara with Nectarine Blossom & Honey creates a floral fragrance that is brimming with sweet fruits. Hints of juicy peach and nectarine blend beautifully with White Tie & Tiara’s unexpected twist of pineapple, tangerine and bergamot.

For a fragrance combination that translates easily from day through to evening, combine the delicate, floral scent of White Tie & Tiara with Vetyver. The addition of elegant woods and the spices of nutmeg and cinnamon, bring a sensual, lasting warmth.

Limited edition. Available June 2010 at Jo Malone boutiques,
www.jomalone.com and select Neiman Marcus stores.

Moments and Memories: Strange Invisible Perfumes (review)

I’ve been wanting to write this review for days. I received some wonderful samples over the weekend, and was instantly smitten. I don’t have many opportunities to wear fragrance (a lot of people in my life are sensitive); so it was great that I had a weekend to try them out. Also great - I don’t have to work today, so I can experience them again as I type.

The two scents are from an amazing perfume house: Strange Invisible Perfumes. I was already in love with the name; and I also fell in love with the fact that they’re an all natural brand. Their scents are made with certified organic, biodynamic or wildcrafted essences. The fragrances are all designed, blended (by hand) and bottled in-house. They’re also committed to sustainability and the environment.

Fire and Cream (Eau de Parfum)

Blurb: Sinuous. Elegant. Ablaze. Hydro-distilled oranges & orange blossom, tuberose, frankincense, white lavender, vetiver, sandalwood & patchouli. Tuberose and white lavender light up the facets of vetiver, vanilla, and patchouli, while essences of hydro-distilled orange and orange blossom smolder in a fiery glow of top notes.

Essence of IX - Limited Edition (Pure Perfume)

Blurb: A limited edition pure perfume. Brambly. Floral. Stirring. White sage, roses, black currant, California lavender, French oak & wild honey. Inspired by Colgin Cellars' winery, the exquisite terroir of their Napa Valley vineyards, and the famed IX Estate (colgincellars.com).

So now I’m in love with these fragrances. And yes, I mean love. Scent is very personal. It goes straight to the part of your brain where memories and emotions are stored. A fragrance can send you immediately into the past or create a moment that will live on into the future.

Fire and Cream (which I tried first) was not at all what I expected. When I saw “orange blossom, vanilla, vetiver,” etc. I was expecting a fairly bright, possibly fruity scent. Instead I got something much better. The notes of orange and vanilla are there, but they work as part of an amazing – kind of intoxicating – combination. It’s musky, dark, slightly sweet, slightly grassy and very feminine (but not girly). After about 20 minutes, the sweeter notes come through and then it’s just heavenly. This scent is as complex (and as simple) as a springtime field in the warm sunshine. In fact it brought me right back to a field in Sonoma that I visited in June of 2001. Flowers, earth, grass and warm sunshine…yum.

Essence of IX was like the flip side of the same coin. Another warm, earthy scent; but definitely more modern and sophisticated. At first, a lot of the lavender comes through in a way that’s very clean and sharp (the good kind). The herbal notes are also very present. It’s a really heady combination in the beginning. As the top notes fade, more of the floral notes start to emerge – especially the rose. The herbal and lavender notes are still there, but as the rose becomes more present, combination is just beautiful. It’s rich, soft, lovely, warm and romantic, yet still very elegant.

Natural perfumes are the way things “used to be.” Before synthetic ingredients and mass-production, scents were hand made from things that came right from the earth. When I tried these fragrances, there was a part of me that knew I had just inhaled “the real thing.”

The website has even more information about how the fragrances are crafted, the ingredients, notes on botanical perfumery, and the company’s commitment to natural processes and sustainability. If you’re a Southern Californian, you may want to take a trip to Venice and visit their Boutique.

Happy Wednesday!

Read all about it!

Jo Malone Introduces Collector’s Edition Coloured Candles with Farrow & Ball
Decorating with Colour Meets Decorating with Scent

In a creative collaboration between two British lifestyle brands, Jo Malone has joined with expert manufacturers of traditional paint and wallpaper, Farrow & Ball, to launch its first-ever collection of coloured candles, designed to create a scented ambiance and enhance any decor.

Each of the Jo Malone iconic candle fragrances – Lime Basil & Mandarin, Wild Fig & Cassis, Blue Agava & Cacao Grapefruit, and Pomegranate Noir – have been matched with a classic Farrow & Ball Colour that is intrinsically linked to the unique inspiration behind each scent. The five limited edition Home Candles that compose this charming collection may be used singly or together to create an alluring aroma and colourful palette.

About Farrow & Ball: Farrow & Ball have remained the expert manufacturers of traditional paint and wallpaper since the 1940’s. From small beginnings, this group of craftsmen rapidly established a reputation for quality, winning important contracts for the supply of paint to the Admiralty. During the post-war period, while virtually all other paint manufacturers abandoned traditional formulations and switched to cheaper acrylic paints with a high plastic content, this privately owned company stuck to its craft and continued making paint to its original formulations, using the finest raw materials, and this remains to this day. Farrow & Ball was always appreciated by a loyal group of customers, and with the revival of interest in restoration and historic colours twenty years ago, its reputation began to spread. Farrow & Ball has been discovered by discerning customers in countries across the world, all of whom appreciate the unique Farrow & Ball look.

About Jo Malone: The British lifestyle brand Jo Malone is known for its unique fragrance portfolio and luxury products for the home. Each scent is uniquely crafted in such a way that fragrances can be combined, allowing each client to become the creator of their very own signature scent. Having rewritten the rules of perfumery by mixing unexpected combinations of ingredients and providing elegant yet playful concepts where scent is used with abandon, The World of Jo Malone™ continues to inspire a loyal following. Whether it is creating a personal scent through Fragrance Combining™, delighting loved ones with The Art of Gift Giving, or creating a welcoming home ambiance through Scent Surround™, every product, concept and philosophy is designed as a unique sensory experience.
