Spring Cleaning: Ahava Cleansing Cream (review)

It’s still spring. And the forecast tomorrow is for…snow. Really? Yes, really. Sigh. Pennsylvania has not gotten the memo from Mother Nature yet.

Anyway, I have decided that it’s spring no matter what. It’s definitely spring in my heart (heh). And it’s going to be spring in my home...because I’m dedicating the week to spring cleaning. And in the spirit of cleaning stuff up – here’s a…wait for it…cleanser! From Ahava.

Cleansing Cream

Blurb: Enriched with Ahava’s moisture-enhancing Osmoter compound, this delicate soapless cream cleanses deeply and nourishes your complexion to give your face a vibrant tone. Make-up, dirt and impurities are effortlessly washed away. Restores skin’s pH balance to its optimal state. Approved for Sensitive Skin. Allergy Tested. Dermatologically Tested.

This may be my first Ahava review (and if I wasn’t so lazy I’d check my archives instead of guessing). I’m amazed I haven’t reviewed their products more. Everyone here at work raves about Ahava – especially when it’s cold and dry. And every now and then someone takes a trip to Israel and brings back a big haul.

I now see why everyone raves. This cleanser is really kind to skin. I tried a sample, and now I’m raving too. It gently and thoroughly removed my makeup (and sunscreen). And after I rinsed, my skin felt clean, fresh and balanced. I’m thinking of getting this for my gym bag. Since I work out in a pool, this would be a great post-chlorine cleanser.

Of course you don’t have to travel to Israel to find this. There’s a dandy U.S. website where you can browse and order to your heart’s content. Orders over $50 ship for free, and you get free samples with each order. You can also find Ahava at drugstore.com and hsn (I’ve even seen it at TJ Maxx and Marshalls).

Speaking of spring cleaning. Here’s another fine instructional film from the helpful folks at Coronet (and the Taylors).

Spring Has Sprung! Dior Crayon Eyeliner Pencil (review)

Spring has arrived, and mother nature is throwing a little bit of a tantrum today (rain, cold, and even some snow for my friends in Northeast PA). But I will not be diverted! I’m welcoming in Spring with a pretty (and portable) bit of green. From Dior.

Crayon Eyeliner Pencil with Blending Tip (in “Precious Green”)

Blurb: Dior makes precision contouring easy with this ingenious, all-in-one eyeliner. Advanced matte coverage formula provides maximum comfort and ease of application. Beauty tip: Draw a fine line along lashes for a natural look. To create the perfect doe eyes, accent the outside corners. Use the foam tip to blend and soften liner or create a base to give eye-shadow extra staying power.

I bought this pencil specifically because of the color. I’ve been hearing about Dior pencils forever, and I’ve been looking for this shade of dark green in a portable pencil (I already have this shade in a cream/gel, but that’s another review).

What I absolutely love about this pencil is the deep, hunter green. I have brown eyes, and wear green a lot; and I’ve been wanting a dark green liner in portable form. This really fits the bill. It has a liner, blender/smudger tip, and comes with a sharpener. Very convenient. The pencil is soft (no tugging or pulling); and the formula smudges/blends beautifully.

I should let you know that this is not a long-wearing formula. But for my purposes, it's fine. I was looking for versatility and portability in a very specific shade. What I also love is that in a pinch, I can use it for contouring, and even rub some on lightly with my finger for a shadow.

Check out the super chic website (browse the must-have's, and be sure to discover Dior Addict). Dior is also available at fine department stores and Sephora.

And…as threatened, I dug up a few of entertaining mid-century instructional videos for this week. Check out how Don and Sue manage to keep looking swell!

Hair Care Friday: Ojon Hydrating Styling Cream (review)

Well I’m slowly coming back to the land of beauty after a very un-lovely cold/flu/virus thing. Trust me – you do not want to get this. So...don’t. If anyone comes near you with so much as a sniffle, flee!

Okay, I’m through being dramatic. How about some hair care? From Ojon.

Hydrating Styling Cream

Blurb: Fortified with exclusive Ojon® oil, an ancient native secret to naturally beautiful hair from Central America’s Tawira tribe, known as “the people of beautiful hair.™” Ojon® Hydrating Styling Cream is a nourishing leave-in styling treatment that provides a light hold while hydrating and smoothing frizzy, damaged or dehydrated hair. The unique formulation contains encapsulated Ojon® microspheres to help detangle while providing a brilliant shine. Formulated without alcohol. Ideal for all hair types to smooth, control frizz and hydrate dry or dehydrated hair.

I spent most of the week on the sofa watching just about every episode ever made of "Law & Order SVU" and "Criminal Intent." Eventually though, I had to pry myself off of the couch and shuffle in to work. Needless to say, my beauty regimen was pretty bare bones.

This Styling Cream was a gigantic help. (I tried it months ago, and kept meaning to write about it, but kept getting sidetracked. So I took it out on Wednesday to help with my hair emergency.) This is a lifesaver when you’re low on time (or energy) and still want your hair to look great. All I have to do is put about 2 or 3 pumps in my hands, rub my hands together and then apply the cream evenly through my damp hair. Super easy. It has a light hold without being sticky; and I get nice controlled curls/waves with extra shine, and no frizz. It also contains hydrating ingredients, so it does a little double duty as well.

As always, a visit to the website is a fine idea. Check out the current offers, see what's new and browse the rituals for each hair type). Ojon is also available at Sephora, Ulta and Nordstrom (check the where to buy section for local shops and salons).

I was so smitten with the instructional film I posted earlier that I had to look for more. Here’s another one from the fine folks at Coronet Films. We can all learn from Coronet Films (and Veronica Lake). Don’t be surprised if you see a few more of these next week.

Accessory Porn: Scarfage

Hi everyone!

I'm starting to feel better, and the first thing I need to do is post a belated birthday to a dear dear friend. And not just any friend. This is someone with a serious scarf fetish - who happens to be the one who got me hooked on scarves.

So even though the actual birthday was yesterday, here are some fab headscarves to check out. Just for fun. Enjoy!

l'm in love with this whole look. Sexy, polished and a little bit retro. Awesome.

Whoa - quel dramatique!

This is my favorite - so romantic!

I love this, but I still haven't figured out how to get it to work on me.

I think this is so flattering and mysterious!

(all sensible and practical: me in a rain scarf)

(yours truly modeling the scarf-as-headband in my now much longer hair).

I feel...respiratorily challenged

I’ve had a bug all week, and I’m not very happy about it. I’m on the mend, though, so there should be beauty coming soon.

And just to keep you occupied until I have my health (and brain cells) back, here’s a fine old timey instructional movie. Maybe we can all learn a little something from “George (played by a very young Dick York).” It's very dramatic.

Here's Dick York later (presumably after he's learned how to rest properly).

Retro Movie Week - Glamorousness

I'm going away for the weekend, so there won't be any reviews until Monday. So to finish up the week, I'm posting trailers for two super glamorous Marilyn Monroe films. The costumes! The color! The madcap hijinx!

Have a great weekend!

Retro Movie Wednesday: Estée Lauder Bronze Goddess Shadow Palette (review)

It looks like the rest of my week is going to be a little rushed. But there’s always time for beauty. Especially if it’s a gorgeous new palette from Estée Lauder.

Bronze Goddess Island Oasis Eye Shadow Palette

Blurb: Shades of paradise. Highlight, define and dramatize your eyes with the shimmering metallics and sunlit satin shadows of summer. Luxurious compact contains 6 complementary shades to wear alone or together-the possibilities are endless.

This yummy, sun-drenched collection of colors is from the Bronze Goddess Soleil Summer Color 2011 Collection. The whole collection is warm, rich and exotic.

The colors in this palette are beautiful and flattering. It’s a range of warm bronzes, glowing golds, a shimmering dark lava (far left), and a pale pearly shade (far right) that reminds me of white sand beaches. My favorite, though, is the gorgeous aqua color. It reminds me of mermaids. Sigh.

Visit the website and check out the whole Summer 2011 Collection. I also recommend playing with the colors on the Virtual Makeup Tool. Estée Lauder is also available in fine department stores.

And since I’m talking about eye candy…how about the photo shoot scene from “Eyes of Laura Mars?” This movie had fashion, danger, mystery and Faye Dunaway (not to mention Tommy Lee Jones looking all studly and earnest).

Retro Movie Tuesday: Korres Evening Primrose Eye Cream (review)

Well it’s already after 10:00 and I’m finally sitting down to my blog. I don’t even have a time for a corny tie in tonight, so let’s just get to my review of a wonderful eye cream. From Korres.

Evening Primrose Eye Cream (SPF 6)

Blurb: Triple action eye cream that reduces fine lines and dark circles while shielding from the sun’s damaging rays. Evening Primrose oil rich in linolenic acid, an essential fatty acid, provides hydration and nourishes the delicate skin around the eyes. Ruscus extracts work synergistically to increase blood microcirculation, quickly and visibly diminishing dark circles while also moisturizing the skin. Zinc oxide, a natural sunscreen, prevents premature aging by providing sun protection.

There are a whole lot of good things going for this eye cream. It’s natural, it’s vegan(!), and it works beautifully. It’s smooth, rich and soothing, yet it also absorbs quickly and doesn’t leave any oily residue.

I got a deluxe sample of this and found that a little bit goes a very long way. It gave me a chance to use it for a couple of weeks, and I really liked the results. My little lines were less noticeable; and the bit of under eye darkness I have is already much lighter. I’m thinking of getting a full size tube of this and seeing how it works over the long haul.

The website has tons of tempting skincare, bath and body items and…makeup. And for the entire month of March, get a deluxe sample of Cherry Oil Lipgloss in “Fuschia” when you spend $35 or more (you also get 3 free samples with every order & free shipping on orders over $50.) Korres is also found at Sephora, ULTA, and beauty.com.

And…since Korres is from Greece, here’s a fine retro trailer for “Boy On A Dolphin.” Of course, the most interesting thing about the movie is neither a boy or a dolphin. It’s Sophia Loren being thoroughly gorgeous and awesome. She dances, she smolders, and she climbs out of the ocean in a very clingy outfit. My kinda girl…

Retro Movie Monday: MAC Lip Pencil (review)

Here’s what happens when I can’t justify buying another lipstick. I buy a lip pencil. Because I care. About…I don’t know…um…diversity. Yeah, that’s right…diversity.

Seriously. I realized that lip pencils have gotten short shrift on my blog, so I decided to try one out. From MAC.

Lip Pencil (in Nightmoth)

Blurb: A pencil designed for shaping, lining or filling in the lip. Lip Pencils have a smooth, creamy texture that is perfect for lining the lips or filling them in. They are long-lasting and available in a wide selection of colours that each work well with many different lipstick shades.

I found out why I should give lip pencils more attention. And I was reminded (again) that I should definitely give MAC more attention. I love this pencil. “Nightmoth” is a deep, dark burgundy (very glamorous). The pencil is highly pigmented, excellent quality, and sharpens to a tiny super precise point.

What really makes these pencils awesome is their versatility. I tried mine as a lip liner and it did a great job (no surprise there). I also completely filled in my lip and got a perfectly precise dramatic, matte finish that stayed put forever. When I wanted something a little more glam, I added a bit of gloss; and when I wanted something softer, I smudged the color over my lips with a finger to get a berry-stained look.

I even used it to line my eyes once. It’s not approved for that, so don’t follow my terrible example...but it looked really awesome. Just saying.

The website is fun to visit. I spent a whole lot of time looking at the Artist in action videos.

And speaking of videos…

During my weekend of serious down time, I watched a lot of movies. Serious “cinema,” as well as seriously cheesy movies. I decided to share the cheesiness, and post a few retro trailers this week. Enjoy (and yes, that is Cher singing the theme song).

Hair Care Friday: Alberto VO5 Perfect Hold Hairsprays, Styling Mousse and Styling Gel (review)

Happy Friday, everyone! I’m in a big rush to do absolutely nothing this weekend. I’m spending as much time as possible being a lazy hermit. But before I disappear, I’ll ring in the weekend with great hair care value from Alberto VO5.

Perfect Hold Aerosol Hairspray

Blurb: This lightweight aerosol hairspray is formulated with a select blend of polymers to provide strong hold while still leaving hair feeling healthy

Perfect Hold Non-Aerosol Hairspray

Blurb: This non-aerosol hair spray has a multi-polymer system known for benchmark levels of humidity resistance, providing strong hold while leaving hair feeling soft.

Perfect Hold Styling Mousse

Blurb: This mousse prevents frizz and holds curl in place with its unique multi-polymer system, while giving hair the bounce and shine it deserves.

Perfect Hold Styling Gel

Blurb: This gel is formulated from a base designed for simplicity to provide great styling hold without stiffness, even in humidity.

I was really happy to try all four of these products. The hairsprays got a great work out during our very windy days of early March, and I was impressed that my hair stayed put.

My two favorites from this line, though, were the Styling Gel and Styling Mousse. The mousse gave nice definition to my curls, added shine, and kept the frizz away. I got a really pretty low-maintenance look with the gel. I rubbed a bit between my hands, rubbed it through my hair and did a bit of scrunching while it dried. It was a very easy, pretty tousled look. And now that my hair is so much longer, I plan to do this a lot during the spring and summer.

Check out the website and browse the multitude of products. There’s also a Q&A section. VO5 products are available at grocery stores, drugstores, club retailers, and online at drugstore.com.

And…I couldn’t resist posting this too. I remember seeing VO5 commercials on TV when I was a kid, so I searched youtube for a vintage ad. Enjoy!

Still all Bright and Stuff: DHC Eye Bright (review)

Winter came back today with cold air and too much wind; but by golly it’s still sunny outside. So I’m staying in my silver lining mood for one more day, and talking about more brightness. From DHC.

Eye Bright

Blurb: Eye enlightenment. Promote healthy-looking skin around your eyes by reducing puffiness and brightening dark circles. Invigorate weary-looking eyes with cooling cucumber and revitalizing Isodonis japonicus (a Japanese botanical). You’ll notice a reviving soothing sensation the moment you apply this fast-absorbing, lightweight gel. The delicate skin around your eyes is especially susceptible to dryness, so Eye Bright is enriched with sodium hyaluronate—a superior moisture magnet.

This fabulous, fabulous product will brighten up any morning (or even an afternoon). Especially when the morning starts out with my eyes looking all dried out and puffy. This stuff makes everything so much better.

It soothes, hydrates, absorbs quickly, and makes my under eye puffiness and dark circles look better in minutes. The hydration also lasts, and I notice I need less concealer – even when my allergies are acting up.

Right now Eye Bright is on sale, so check out the website. The site is full of awesome stuff (most of which is now on my wish list). Don’t forget to browse the sale section, and order a catalogue (which often comes with samples).

And speaking of brightness – I forgot to mention that yesterday was the birthday of Dr. Seuss! (And also my friend, Rachel.) If you need a bit of brightness in your day, I suggest heading on over to Seussville and spending a few moments with your favorite character(s). Here's my personal favorite.)

More Brightness: Pixi Lumi Lux Radiance Powder (review)

I'm still feeling all bright and cheery, so let's continue with something from pixi.

Lumi Lux Radiance Powder

Blurb: Silky palette of all-over illuminating powder that provides a fresh radiance to face, cheeks, eyes and décolleté – perfect for counteracting tired skin. Inspired by a Swedish summer’s clear crisp light, this all-over powder is the perfect pick-me-up for your face. With peachy gold, rose, pinky peach, and nude powders, the palette gives a youthful & skin-brightening glow. An instantly angelic sheen in a quick swirl of a brush! Mica provides dense natural pigment. Vitamin E nourishes and protects.

So far pixi is rocking my world. Every time I try something; I go running to Target to get more. I tried the Radiance in “Peach Petal,” and now I’m hooked. At first I couldn't figure out why the pan was so big; but now I know why - I use it all the time.

The four colors that make up the design are two shades of rose, a warmer more orange tone (the leaves), and the main soft peach tone. I thought they looked nice separately, but I thought it looked best when I swirled my brush through all the colors. I got a subtle shimmer anywhere I applied it. I’ve mostly worn it on my cheeks, but I also tried dusting it on my décolletage, and it looked great (can’t wait until summer now). The look is fresh and pretty, and it’s perfect anytime. I also tried layering it over one of my cheek stains and loved the way that looked too. Rock on with your radiant self, pixi!

I’m loving the website too. (Check out the web exclusives, and sign up for the Pixi rewards program.) Right now you can get free shipping on orders $50 and up – and receive an additional 20% off online (use coupon code: TWENTYOFF). And if you can’t wait to try it out, you can also find Pixi at Target.

Happy March! Origins Brighter by Nature™ Skin Tone Correcting Serum (review)

I can’t believe it’s March already. (But it is.) And spring is definitely in the air. It was still chilly today; but there was all kinds of sunshine. Even though I like the snow, it was nice to see everything looking so bright and cheerful.

So in honor of the sunny new month – here’s some nice bright skin care. From Origins.

Brighter by Nature™ Skin Tone Correcting Serum

Blurb: Considering costly laser resurfacing or chemical peels? Nature has an effective, yet gentle alternative. This clinically proven plant serum with Japanese Basil Leaf, and naturally-derived Vitamin C helps create more even skin tone and zap the appearance of dark spots. Helps prevent future spotting. There’s no scarring or scorching skin. No downtime, no hefty price tag. It’s true brightness with no regrets.

I’ve always been a big fan of Origins, and I’ve been wanting to try this serum for a while. I’m really glad I did. It moisturized and smoothed out my skin extremely well. And after a couple of weeks, my skin tone was brighter and more even. It worked especially well in the areas where I’m a little bit red and blotchy – and it also brightened some of the slightly darker areas near my jawline. I also found it very soothing. Good stuff!

Check out all the cool stuff on the website. Be sure to take a look at the special offers and the what's new section. And of course, the store locator.

Go Get This! Stila Travel Palettes - Fabulous in Fiji + Trendsetting in Tokyo (review)

I’m jumping right to the review so you can jump on this spectacular deal. From Stila.

Travel Palettes - Fabulous in Fiji + Trendsetting in Tokyo

Fabulous in Fiji

Blurb: Sit back and relax as you escape with Ali to fabulous island of Fiji. Inspired by the tropical colors of this serene getaway, this palette will make you sparkle like the crystal clear ocean.

Trendsetting in Tokyo

Blurb: Experience the bustling, fast-paced metropolis as you follow Zoe through her Tokyo adventure. Inspired by the neon lights and classic geisha trends, this palette will have you looking fashion-forward.

These travel palettes are completely and thoroughly awesome. They’re pretty, chic, portable, and the packaging is excellent (a secure magnetic flip top). Each has a lovely convertible (lip/cheek) color, and four shadows (at least one is a darker shade that can double as a liner with a wet brush). There’s a good sized mirror; and the slim palette closes easily, and fits almost anywhere (measures 2.5” x 4.5” when closed).

Fabulous in Fiji features tropical shadows and a bronze convertible color. Trendsetting in Tokyo has edgier pink/purple/gold/black shadows and a convertible color in Sakura.

In addition to wonderful Stila quality, these palettes are also an amazing value. Normally, they retail for about $10 each (I know - wow). And right now, Stila is offering both of these together as a set for…$9. That’s right – 9 bucks for two palettes! I ordered two sets, and I’m keeping one and saving the other two for gifts. I’m actually thinking of stocking up. They would make incredible hostess gifts, bridesmaid gifts, or even stocking stuffers (if you're thinking that far ahead).

The Set is available on the website. You can also enter the Light Up The World Contest and check out the Tips and Tricks page. There are 3 other Travel Palettes too. Each is $10 (still an amazing value), and Stila is also available at Sephora.

Sunday Edition: Four Sexy Looks from blow NY

This also came my way before Valentine’s Day; but there’s always time for gorgeous looks…

Tips & Tricks from the experts at blow NY

Whether celebrating with your special someone or your sassy single girlfriends, choose a hairstyle that would make even cupid fall in love with you! With these quick tips from the experts at blow, the new york blow dry bar your hair will look irresistible all night long.

Sexy Bedhead: Change up your picture-perfect look and let your inner vixen out for the night with sexy, effortless hair.

1. Starting with dry hair, work in blowPro Faux Dry at the crown to remove any oil and to add texture.

2. Use a 1½-inch curling iron to create curls. Don’t use the clamp, rather wrap hair around the full barrel.

3. Evenly apply blowPro Blow Out Spray all over. Flip hair over and rake your fingers through the curls to break them up.

4. Spritz blowPro Beach Blow into the palms of your hands and scrunch into hair for a tousled look.

Sleek and Straight: If you always wear your hair naturally curly then surprise him with a chic, modern look.

1. Work in a nickel-sized dollop of blowPro Straight to the Point and a dime-sized drop of blowPro Weather Girl into damp hair before blow drying.

2. Using duck bill clips divide hair into 4-6 sections.

3. Blow dry each section using a paddle brush. The more tension you use, the straighter your hair will be.

4. Simultaneously run a fine-toothed comb and flat iron through hair for a smooth, straight finish.

Fun and Sweet Up-Do: Keep the night laid back with a playful up-do.

1. Section off a triangular area of hair at the crown. Using a fine-toothed comb gently tease hair at the back of this section. Draw the front section of hair over the “cushion” you created and gently secure with two small bobby pins by creating an “X” on the top mid/back part of your head. Be careful you don’t flatten the volume you created.

2. Use a 1½-inch curling iron to curl the rest of the hair.

3. Gather hair into a loose bun at the nape of the neck and finish with blowPro Blow Out Spray for touchable hold.

4. ** Running late? Skip Step 2 and work in blowPro Beach Blow to accentuate your hair’s natural texture before creating the bun.

Glamorous Blow Out: Not sure what your plans are? A gorgeous blow out will complete any look.

1. Apply blowPro Ready Set Blow to clean, towel-dried hair. Section hair into 5 sections using duck bill clips.

2. Dry each section with a large round boar bristle brush. On the final pass for each section switch the hair dryer to the cool setting to set and minimize frizz and fly-aways.

3. Roll each section back up and secure with clips. Apply blowPro Blow Out Spray to keep the look voluminous all day long.

4. Remove pins and tilt head forward and rake fingers through hair to loosen up the sections.

5. Flip hair back and work in a dime-sized amount of blowPro Weather Girl for a smooth finish.

6. ** Rushing home from work? Fake a fabulous blow out by focusing on the top section of hair. Make sure it is fully dry with ample volume and your look will be drop dead gorgeous.

This season the perfect gift is a blow out card at blow, the new york blow dry bar at one of the 2 NYC flagship locations (DOWNTOWN: 342 West 14th Street between 8th and 9th ave or UPTOWN: 843 Lexington at 64th St)
