June 8 is World Oceans Day: La Mer / Oceana Partnership Celebrates 5th Anniversary

Here's another beauty company doing beautiful things and giving back. La Mer (makers of unbelievably fabulous beauty and skincare) has partnered with Oceana for 5 years to advocate for the world's oceans. Read on…

World Oceans Day 2010
La Mer Celebrates Fifth Anniversary of Partnership with Oceana

With a heritage deeply rooted to the beauty and power of the sea, La Mer is proud to announce the fifth anniversary of its partnership with Oceana, the world’s leading international ocean advocacy organization. Since 2005, La Mer has actively supported the efforts of Oceana in the protection and preservation of the oceans as a tribute to its founder, Dr. Max Huber. Inspired by the rejuvenating and healing powers of the sea, La Mer has created a limited-edition 100 ml World Oceans Day “blue” Crème de la Mer jar and will make a $200,000 donation to Oceana. This is the first time the look of La Mer’s signature Crème de la Mer jar has been changed; “going blue” signifies the brand’s continued commitment to the oceans.

Successes, Support and Expansion

The remarkable accomplishments of Oceana have raised critical awareness on the plight of our seas and their precious resources. Oceana’s specific campaigns to promote habitat protection, pollution control, safe seafood practices and responsible fishing have facilitated extensive global policy changes grounded by their tireless scientific research and reporting. La Mer is proud to support the continued growth and development of Oceana and honored to celebrate the fifth year of a dedicated partnership.

Over the course of the past five years, La Mer has donated over half a million dollars globally towards Oceana’s sea expeditions, studies and preservation efforts. La Mer’s $200,000 World Oceans Day donation in 2010 will support Oceana’s habitat protection campaign and will also help heighten awareness for their recent global expansion in Belize. The opening of Oceana’s new office there highlights their ability to identify and address areas in need of attention and whose health holds great importance in promoting the future wellbeing of the marine ecosystem.

Oceana CEO Andrew Sharpless explains, “Because Belize has the second largest Barrier Reef in the world and is one the jewels of the sea, anybody who thinks about the world's oceans from a global perspective thinks about Belize. In late June, UNESCO added the Belize Barrier Reef to the UNESCO list of endangered World Heritage sites. With our new Oceana offices and local Belizean leaders, Oceana is focused on helping Belize to protect its incredible marine heritage and resources. I’m confident that in three or four years we’ll look back and say, ‘we made a difference for the oceans and for Belize.”

World Oceans Day Dive

In 2009, The United Nations made World Oceans Day an official global holiday. To anniversary this and share the experience of Oceana’s extraordinary work, La Mer will sponsor a deep-sea dive in Belize with Oceana Spokeswoman January Jones. A passionate sea advocate and distinguished actress, January has been working with Oceana to raise awareness and help educate the public about ocean issues and ways to get involved.

La Mer Goes Blue

A classic icon of beauty since its creation – the Crème de la Mer jar will “go blue” for World Oceans Day 2010, marking the first time any change has ever been made to the look of its symbolic jar since originally designed by Dr. Max Huber. La Mer President Maureen Case explains, “The heritage of our brand is really founded in the classic emblem of our signature product, Crème de la Mer. Historically, La Mer has never made any alterations to the original jar, logo, color or design created by Dr. Max Huber until now. We are so proud to do so in celebration of this five-year partnership with Oceana as it harkens back to the core of what La Mer is all about – The Sea.” The limited-edition 100 ml “blue” Crème de la Mer jar is available in limited quantities and will be sold globally in the month of June in celebration of World Oceans Day.

World Oceans Day

Created in 1992 and made official by the United Nations in 2009, World Oceans Day takes place annually on June 8th and is a day to recognize the sea’s importance as a vital ecosystem and take action to preserve its delicate habitats and wildlife. With over 300,000 members in 150 countries, Oceana’s science-based policies have greatly reduced over-fishing and protected threatened marine habitats.

Saving Face (in March): La Mer The Regenerating Serum

Really? Truly? Yes indeed - another exciting launch from La Mer! A new serum with La Mer’s proprietary Miracle Broth™, and the new Regenerating Ferment™ (derived from marine plant stem cells) with superconductor, Colloidal Gold, and anti-oxidant, Lime Tea. Start reading…!

Introducing The Regenerating Serum
Heritage of Healing

Crème de la Mer was conceived under extraordinary circumstances. Years ago, aerospace physicist Dr. Max Huber set out to create a cream to help heal the appearance of the scars he had suffered as a result of severe burns from a lab accident. To this day, the miraculous powers of The Miracle Broth™ —Dr. Huber’s potent elixir known for its healing energies—remain at the heart of Crème de la Mer and are at the core of La Mer’s latest innovation in skin care: The Regenerating Serum.

The Next Wave: The Regenerating Serum

Current scientific studies suggest that lines and wrinkles are “micro-scars” to skin’s underlying support network. Their formation is thought to be triggered by chronic inflammation caused by a variety of internal and external stressors such as UV sunlight and free radicals. These inflammatory stressors can lead to the destruction of collagen, which in turn provokes premature skin aging.

Inspired by these findings, The Max Huber Research Labs have created The Regenerating Serum, La Mer’s new anti-aging powerhouse. Four years and hundreds of hours of lab work in the making, this ultra-luxe elixir is the result of the combined effort of physicists, marine botanists and biologists around the world. Not only does it contain a high concentration of La Mer’s proprietary Miracle Broth™, but it also includes the new Regenerating Ferment™, derived from marine plant stem cells.

Selected for its vigor and ability to withstand and resist stress, the stem cells of a marine plant Eryngium Maritimum are harvested and grown in a lab through sustainable processes. The cultivated cells and the liquid that contains them are then fermented, using sono-chemistry that helps to boost the activity of the ingredients to create The Regenerating Ferment™. It’s a process similar to that which Dr. Max Huber pioneered when he created its predecessor, the Miracle Broth™ in Crème de la Mer.

The Regenerating Ferment™ helps skin trigger its natural production of collagen, elastin and other “youth proteins,” harnessing the power of the skin’s ability to renew its appearance. In a day, skin looks rejuvenated. With continued use, the appearance of lines, wrinkles and pores is radically diminished for a seemingly ageless look. And this multi-action serum accomplishes all of these feats with a lightweight suspension formula that’s friendly to all skin types.

Powerful Anti-Aging Ingredients:

Miracle Broth™: The original fermented elixir, known for its healing energies, developed by Dr. Max Huber.

The Regenerating Ferment™: A new bio-ferment containing potent marine plant stem cells. The Regenerating Ferment™ assists in the skin’s renewal, helping support its natural structure, restore its integrity and protect it from external aggressors.

The Marine Peptide Ferment: An anti-age marine algae and peptide complex which helps firm the look of skin and boost its natural collagen production, reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles.

Colloidal Gold: A skincare super-conductor that effectively delivers skin smoothing, firming and anti-irritant benefits to the skin.

Lime Tea: A unique lime peel extraction, and one of Dr. Huber’s original ingredients included in Crème de la Mer—a perfect antioxidant companion to the Miracle Broth™.

The Inside Story: Three Items from La Mer’s Holiday Offerings (review)

Ooooh, Deluxe, Luxurious La Mer! About a week or two ago, I featured some of the awesome La Mer Holiday Offerings. A few of these collections (The Connoisseur Collection, The Signature Collection and Legendary Luxury) contain three of La Mer's signature products, so I thought I'd take a look at them today.

Crème de la Mer

Blurb: The legendary Crème that has inspired a cult following. Even now, it is not entirely clear how Crème de la Mer works. For us schooled in logic, it is something of a jolt to the imagination. But facts are facts and certainly the proof can be seen on the faces of those who use it. In a short time, skin becomes softer, firmer, looks virtually creaseless. Aging lines and pores are noticeably less visible. Even the driest of complexions are healed. Sensitivities are soothed. And, of course, there are some who insist it has produced astonishing results - as Dr. Max Huber witnessed. No wonder many who have tried every cream available remain steadfast in their devotion to Crème de la Mer.

I don't even know what I can add to the blurb. Crème de la Mer has become almost iconic in the beauty world. It's just an amazing moisturizer. Super, super hydrating, soothing, smoothing and is absolutely fine for my breakout-prone skin. There's a reason everyone raves about this cream!

The Lifting Face Serum

Blurb: At the heart of The Lifting Face Serum is a rare blue algae that flourishes in pristine waters fed by ancient glacial waters and underground springs. Its exceptional lifting energies come to life as it journeys through a meticulous bio-fermentation process, boosting its efficacy far beyond anything previously imagined. A network of proteins within the Blue Algae Lift Ferment stimulates skin's own internal building blocks while other proteins help prevent their premature breakdown. Skin's ability to renew itself is greatly enhanced. A youthful smoothness and bounce are tremendously restored.

This is a lovely serum. It feels healing and soothing without being heavy. I also like the slight firming feeling I get after it sinks in. I even get little bit of a glow! I haven't used this long term, but the results after a few days have been delightful.

The Eye Concentrate

Blurb: Ultraluxe eye treatment that dissolves the appearance of lines and wrinkles, dark circles and puffiness. This concentrated, ultraluxe eye treatment quenches and conditions impressionable skin. The Eye Concentrate significantly reduces the appearance of dark circles and puffiness, lines and wrinkles, encouraging the eye area to look and feel healthy, supple and luminous as never before. The Eye Concentrate is infused with three unique forms of Miracle Broth™: the original, a concentrated form and a new, encapsulated form designed to optimize continuous release to the skin. Known for its healing energies, the Miracle Broth™ infuses skin with the energy it needs to focus on renewal.

I love the Eye Concentrate! Especially now. Due to dry air and heaters; my eyes are really dry and puffy when I wake up. The cream melts into my skin and stays there all day. What I also like is that I can dab a little on in the evening if I'm going somewhere to "freshen" things up a little. Since it sinks in so quickly, I can touch up my makeup right away.

These three items are all sold separately too. You can find them on the website, and at fine stores like Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman and Saks Fifth Avenue.

The Masked Blogger II: La Mer The Hydrating Facial (review)

This week's "Mask" opera/beauty tie-in* is all about La Mer. All my running around and schedule craziness means that when I do have some down time, I am making the most of it by pampering the u-know-what out of myself (and getting caught up on TV).

The Hydrating Facial

Blurb: A sumptuous spa-like facial that saturates the skin with signature Hydrating Ferments to reawaken the appearance of youth.

Short version for those of you who are also very busy: this mask completely rocks.

Longer version: The mask comes in two parts (one for the upper part of the face and one for the lower). You open the packets, unfold each part of the mask and lay it over your face. Then you rest for eight minutes (loved that!), remove the mask and rub the remaining product into your skin.

Like a good girl, I followed the instructions (especially the resting); and when I was all done, I had a smooth, pampered, soft, soothed, hydrated happy little face! I even liked walking around with the mask on (very spa like). Everything about using this mask is lavish and indulgent…and you can be lavished and indulged in under 15 minutes!

If you take a look at the website, you can browse all the goodies while learning about joining La Mer in the fight against breast cancer.

Mad and Rad: La Mer at the 2009 Emmys

So happy that Mad Men rocked the Emmy's!

Seems like La Mer did a little rocking too - especially with the incredibly perfectly MAD Christina Hendricks. And the utterly totally RAD Toni Collette. Read on…

2009 Emmy Awards

Secrets from the pros – makeup artists Gita Bass and Georgie Eisdell share some of their La Mer must haves for the big night!

Prepping Christina Hendricks for the evening, her makeup artist Georgie Eisdell says, “The look we went for with Christina had a little 20's influence. I wanted it to keep Christina's makeup really fresh, clean and elegant. I prepared her skin with La Mer’s The Moisturizing Lotion – it’s perfect to hydrate the skin with being greasy and a perfect base for foundation. Next, I love La Mer’s Treatment Fluid Foundation SPF 15 for Christina. It is light on the skin but gives excellent coverage where needed. Under her eyes I used La Mer’s new Radiant Concealor SPF 25 - a genius product, it goes on so easily and does not cake under the eye. Before I started on her eye I lathered her lips with La Mer’s The Lip Balm. I love using this on Christina; she has full lips so keeping them hydrated is really important and when it's time to apply lipstick it goes on beautifully.”

A big winner last night – Best Actress in a Comedy – Toni Collette’s makeup artist Gita Bass also shares some her La Mer favorites that helped her get Toni looking red carpet ready. Her top picks? “Prepping for the Emmy’s we used La Mer’s The Body Lotion, The Lip Balm and La Mer’s new Radiant Concealer SPF 25.” A big win and a great beauty look had Toni glowing all evening.

And yet again, pretty people, we have something new and awesome from La Mer. La Mer The Radiant Concealer! Start reading right this minute…

La Mer introduces The Radiant Concealer SPF 25
The Max Huber Research Labs designed La Mer’s gemstone-infused Skincolor Collection to help capture light and transfer its energy to the skin, continuously enhancing the benefits of La Mer skincare. Lighten Up! La Mer The Moisturizing Gel Cream (review)

Dedicating the past few days to getting good and worked up about my car situation seems to have gotten a lot of the anguish out of my system. Also, I was out singing last night, and that just makes everything better. BTW: It was a fabulous opera competition at a local restaurant (Trattoria San Nicola in Paoli, PA). So not only did I get to sing my favorite opera arias; the singers also got an amazing Italian dinner (and wine) (and dessert) afterwards. And I even made the finals! Pretty hard to be all worried and spazzy after a night like that. Today I'm all lighthearted and looking forward to the weekend.

What's that I hear in the distance? A segue way perhaps?...

(Did you really think I could resist? Surely you know better.)

To take full advantage of my seriously lighter mood, I'm going to discuss the seriously lighter The Moisturizing Gel Cream from La Mer.

Big Blurb: Inspired by sea kelp’s naturally refreshing and humectant properties, The Max Huber Research Labs have designed a uniquely lightweight new form of La Mer to moisturize the skin – The Moisturizing Gel Cream. Created with the original concentration of Miracle Broth™ and exclusive Lime Tea found in Crème de la Mer, The Moisturizing Gel Cream has the power to visibly transform the skin, leaving it hydrated, conditioned and refreshed. Soft and soothing to the touch, The Moisturizing Gel Cream offers a new texture and form preference while delivering all the transformational benefits of Crème de la Mer. Ideal for warm-weather climates and occasions when Crème de la Mer may be considered too rich, it deeply hydrates the skin and leaves a comfortably soft finish.

At the heart of The Moisturizing Gel Cream is the nutrient-rich Miracle Broth™ that is known for its healing energies. To create this vital essence, La Mer’s special sea kelp, harvested twice a year, combined with other natural ingredients - calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron, lecithin, Vitamin C, E and B12, plus oils of citrus, eucalyptus, wheat germ, alfalfa and sunflower - journey though a slow 3-4 month bio-fermentation process. Vital energies are released as the ingredients transform into a whole far greater than the sum of its parts. True to Huber’s coveted formula, Crème de la Mer’s exclusive Lime Tea is also utilized in its original concentration. Created through the time-intensive process of extraction, La Mer’s Lime Tea is an exceptionally powerful anti-oxidant. Helping protect against a wide range of external insults, it gives skin the ability to focus energy on repairing its appearance.

Well you certainly don't need me to tell you how amazing and luxurious La Mer products are. And this Gel Cream is a wonderful lightweight version of the original Crème De La Mer. It contains the Miracle Both, the Lime Tea, and an army of nutrients. The texture is perfect for someone like me (oily/combo/break-out prone) – especially in the summer humidity. The consistency is lovely (so is the fragrance), and it makes my skin feel soft and hydrated without any heaviness. It absorbs very quickly and sits under my makeup beautifully (no shine or slip). I also tried this on my really sensitive neck for a couple of nights and could believe how it calmed and soothed! (It was kind of amazing actually.)

This was the perfect time for me to try out this cream. I am thoroughly appreciating this little bit of luxury (and lightness). La Mer is available at select Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman, and through their website.

While I'm Away...Check out World Ocean's Day!

Did you know that I wrote poetry in high school? Do you really need to know that? Hmmm. Probably not.

Did you also know that next Monday (June 8) is World Ocean's Day? Now that's something you might actually want to know. I for one did not know this until I got some info (below) from La Mer. Read on and do some learnin':

La Mer and Oceana Partner to Celebrate World Oceans Day 2009
100% Net Proceeds of the Limited Edition Crème to go to Oceana
Today, La Mer and Oceana announce a special partnership to raise awareness for World Oceans Day 2009. As part of this partnership, La Mer has designed a limited-edition 250 ml “World Oceans Day” Crème, with 100% of net proceeds going to Oceana. The World Oceans Day limited edition Crème de la Mer will be sold in May and June at Saks Fifth Avenue and www.lamer.com.

Ocean conservation has always been extremely important to La Mer. By responsibly harvesting only the top section of the sea kelp that reaches the ocean’s surface, La Mer is able to help sustainably maintain the underwater sea kelp forest ecosystem and protect this marine plant for future generations.

“I used to think the biggest threat to our oceans was pollution before I met the dedicated team at Oceana,” shares Andy Bevacqua, Vice President. Research and Development, The Max Huber Research Labs and Oceana Ocean Council Member “But after spending time with Oceana scientists and on board the Oceana Ranger, I think an even bigger threat is overfishing. In the collaboration between La Mer and Oceana, I have come to understand that the only way we will get things done and make real change is if the three prongs -- the government, NGOs, and industry -- all work together. We all have a common goal.”

World Oceans Day

La Mer’s collaboration with Oceana began in 2005, and this is the second year that La Mer and Oceana have partnered to raise awareness for World Oceans Day. By creating a limited edition World Oceans Day Crème and donating 100% of its net proceeds to Oceana, La Mer helps support Oceana’s efforts to win specific and concrete policy changes to reduce pollution and prevent the irreversible collapse of fish populations, marine mammals and other sea life.

Created in 1992, World Oceans Day takes place annually on June 8th and is a day to recognize the sea’s importance as a vital ecosystem and take action to preserve its delicate habitats and wildlife. With over 300,000 members in 150 countries, Oceana’s science-based policies have greatly reduced over-fishing and protected threatened marine habitats.

Oceana Ranger Expeditions

On Oceana’s Ranger expedition, teams of divers and marine biologists gather crucial research that can be used to protect ocean habitats. Photos, videos and data collected on Ranger expeditions help gain insight into areas like fish spawning grounds that need to be protected so that fish populations can rebound and stay healthy. The Oceana Ranger studies rare corals, sea plants and underwater canyons. With the information obtained from the 2008 Ranger investigation, Oceana will be able to produce a scientific report that will be used in the proposals for the protection of marine habitats and/or marine areas.

“Recent studies suggest only one-half of 1 percent of funds going to environmental causes goes toward protecting the oceans," shares Amber Valletta, Oceana supporter and Actor. "But history teaches us that the oceans can rebound if we give them a break, which is why every dollar going to groups like Oceana can make an incredible difference."

ESS-PEA-EFF Part 1: Oh la la, La Mer! (review)

Woo Hoo! Long weekend coming up!

Memorial Day weekend is sort of the unofficial start of summer (and outdoor activities). Going to the beach, barbecuing, outdoor events and various sports (which I know nothing about). Here in Philly, we are all fairly sure that there will be warmth (and sunshine) soon. And I'm assuming that many of you will be outdoors enjoying the warm weather. I'm also assuming that everyone will be wearing plenty of SUN PROTECTION. Yes? (Please tell me yes.) You know, out of all the beauty treatments available, the most guaranteed, sure-fire path to youthful and gorgeous skin is still SUN PROTECTION.

About 18 months ago, I converted to the religion of sunscreen after two…gasp!...brown spots began to appear on my cheeks. All that sunbathing during my teen years and my later disregard for sunscreen resulted in…SPOTS! Then the dermatologist told me that there would be MORE if I didn't mend my ways. So I mended them. Now I always wear sunscreen on my face and neck. My ways are officially mended.

Since there's a long weekend on the horizon, I am going to spend the next few days talking about some fine products with SPF (Sun Protection Factor). There are so many out there now, so I'm going to focus on some of the really stellar products I've found for the face (and neck).

And I'm starting with the big guns. Two words: La Mer. Two fabulous items from La Mer have totally knocked my socks off.

Fabulous Item #1: The SPF 30 UV Protecting Fluid

Blurb: Provides broad spectrum UVA/ UVB protection as well as an array of visible light-transformation benefits. The Smart Seaweed Ferment also attracts moisture to the skin to create a protective, emollient barrier, helping to prevent dehydration. Luxurious and lightweight to the touch, the transparent formula is an ideal makeup primer, providing a smooth, flawless finish as it conditions and helps protect skin.

I've already heard amazing things about this fluid and it did not disappoint! This sunscreen has everything: A nice high SPF, a high percentage of zinc oxide, non-comedogenic, lightly conditioning and it feels absolutely weightless. Not only that, it's invisible (zero white cast). And it really did work well as a primer. This is sun protection, skincare and beauty all in one bottle. Spectacular!

Fabulous Item #2: The Treatment Powder Foundation (SPF 15)

Blurb: Weightless color and precious gemstones smooth away imperfections to reveal a naturally flawless finish. La Mer’s potent skincare benefits leave skin looking luminous. This lightweight compact formula smoothes away imperfections to transform the complexion. A signature Radiant Ferment continuously improves clarity and brightness to illuminate the skin. Airspun seaborne particles – some of the lightest materials on earth – create an imperceptible finish that leaves skin looking naturally flawless all day.

I seem to be running across some nice powder foundations lately. But La Mer's is extra gorgeous! It goes on easily and feels wonderful. A single application (again, I used a kabuki brush) gives a medium coverage and I was able to build and get more coverage where I need it. The finish was velvety smooth (and slightly luminous) -- and it still looked lovely hours later. I also tried a light dusting over my liquid foundation and got great results too. Home run, La Mer!

La Mer is available at select Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman, and through their website.
