Friday Fun: LA Lakers Love Stila!

Even though I am pitifully ignorant of sports, I was born in Los Angeles and grew up in LA County – so if I don't post this, I probably won't be allowed to return home for Thanksgiving.

It turns out that Stila sponsored the beauty wardrobe for the Los Angeles Laker Girls (FYI: basketball). Kudos to Stila! I'm pretty impressed that the Laker Girls can jump around in a hot stadium for hours and still look great!

And to congratulate the 2009 NBA Champions, Stila has put together a Stila Loves The Lakers Set. The set includes: Illuminating Tinted Moisturizer, Convertible Color, Smudge Pot in Golden Noir and Lash Visor in Brown.
(Now see, if sports had more fun beauty products and a little less chasing balls around, I might become a fan.)

Mattify Me! More Awesomeness from AWAKE (review)

Summer is just a few days away! And along with all the longer days and extra fun, it's also a time when my complexion begins to go from glowy to downright shiny. Of course I'm sure you have absolutely no idea what I'm talking about. But just in case you do, over the next few weeks, I'll be checking out some products that help control oil (and/or breakouts).

I'm starting with one of my all time favorite, fabulous brands: Awake Cosmetics. In the past I've discussed some of their makeup, but their skincare products are equally fabulous.

Company Blurb: Stress Free Skin. AWAKE utilizes state-of-the art Japanese technology to incorporate natural botanicals into formulations that are gentle enough for sensitive skin. Each product is designed to take a targeted approach that addresses specific skin concerns. Mineral oil-free, hypo-allergenic and fragrance-free (with the exception of the Polyphection Skincare Series and Paradise Call).

I've been trying out two new items and I LOVE them!

Deep Purity Clay Wash

Blurb: A foaming exfoliating wash formulated with natural sea clay to effectively absorb excess oils, help minimize the appearance of pores and prevent acne formation. The acne-fighting formula contains exfoliating plant fibers to rid skin of dulling impuities.

Wowee! I am trying really hard to think of another word besides "fabulous," but so far I can't. Because this wash is, well…fabulous. I wet my face, lathered it up in my hands and gently washed my face (it's very foamy). After I rinsed, my face was smooth and clean, clean, clean (without feeling tight or dry)! This wash pretty much chased away every bit of oil and told it never to come back. Like I said, fabulous.

Day Matteness

Blurb: A light-textured primer that enhances makeup application by controlling sebum and eliminating shine throughout the day. Used as a foundation primer, it instantly gives skin an even, silky tone and provides a refined finish even on the most shine-prone areas. Thyme and Japanese Coptis Extract keep oil in check, while Peppermint Extract minimizes pore size.

I totally love this. Because it totally works. It works as a primer (my pores looked smaller, my skin was smoother and my makeup looked better) and it was GREAT at controlling shine. My t-zone stayed shine free for hours. And here's some extra goodness: when my skin did get a little shiny in the late afternoon, I dabbed some on the shiny areas and they mattified instantly!

I'll probably check out some of their other things later. AWAKE also has a Sebum regulating lotion and the cutest little pack of blotting papers ever. Visit their website and click the Special Offers button while you're there.

Exciting New Breakthroughs from DDF!

One of the best things about being a blogger is learning about all the amazing new breakthroughs in beauty and skincare. Last night DDF Skincare unveiled their newest products at a fabulous launch event. We gathered at At Vermillion in New York for cocktails and hors d’oevres while Principle Scientist, Laura Goodman, and DDF Director of Training and Education, Georgia Sturges, shared some amazing insight into the latest ingredients and technology. I'm a long time fan and user of DDF and now I have SIX more reasons to cheer!

Acne Fighting Protocol

Blurb: DDF’s new acne protocol begins with a core combination of ingredients which comprise the DDF Clarifying Neutralizing Complex. The core contains a soothing blend of botanicals and skin conditioners including Glycerin, Aloe Leaf Juice, Marigold Flower Extract, Ginger Root Extract and Witch Hazel Extract. Additionally, specialized ingredients are added to each product for specific AM and PM care.

AM: Mattifying Oil Control UV Moisturizer (SPF 15) - The exclusive Daytime Clarifying Neutralizing Complex contains the botanical humectant core ingredients as well as micronized oil-controlling particles which provide an instantaneous mattifying effect. These extraordinary mattifying components instantly minimize shine. In addition, this daily moisturizer contains broad spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreen technology to help protect skin from the sun’s harmful rays, including those rays that penetrate the deepest.

PM: Acne Control Treatment - Throughout the night, it works to combat existing blemishes and fight future breakouts. The exclusive Nighttime Clarifying Neutralizing Complex contains the botanical humectant core blend, Decylene glycol, a skin conditioner, and salicylic acid. This proven, highly effective acne fighting medication penetrates pores overnight and helps to exfoliate the outer layer of the affected area, eliminating excess fluid build-up by working to keep pores unclogged.

These are very near and dear to my heart (and complexion). I previously wrote about how much I love their Benzoyl Peroxide Gel and I am so thrilled that they’ve added these two new items. The Mattifying Oil Control Moisturizer keeps skin hydrated, minimizes shine and helps protect from UVA/UVB sun damage. The Acne Control Treatment conditions skin at night while it exfoliates and fights blemishes. They also work really well with the BP Gel.

Advanced Protocol (Anti-Aging Restorative)

Blurb: DDF Advanced Protocol is the only skin care in its class with the super antioxidant benefits of Turmeric. An integral part of Ayurvedic treatment, Turmeric has been used in traditional Indian medicine for thousands of years. Most notably, it is a known powerhouse antioxidant which can quench damaging free radicals at the skin’s surface. Turmeric contains powerful phytonutrients, which have been shown to protect the body from the harmful effects of many damaging aging processes including oxidation and inflammation. DDF’s four new Anti-Aging Restorative products are designed to work together for maximum results, combining potent antioxidants, peptides, barrier-enhancing vitamins, rich humectants and sunscreens.

Advanced Micro-Exfoliation Cleanser - Rice Bran Wax gently exfoliates while cleansing impurities. Nourishing hydrators work up to three hours after cleansing to reveal beautifully smooth skin. In clinical testing, 89 percent of women said it left skin feeling moisturized and hydrated.

Advanced Eye Firming Concentrate – Massage it in to reduce the look of puffiness and wrinkles while instantly firming for a lifted appearance that helps restore a more youthful eye contour.

Advanced Firming Cream – Neutralizes 82 percent of surface free radicals, hydrates, and fortifies skin’s moisture barrier to instantly firm and tighten skin.

Advanced Moisture Defense UV Cream (SPF 15) – Instantly firms and tightens skin with hydration while protecting skin’s moisture barrier with antioxidants and guarding against the harmful rays of the sun with broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection.

Wow! This is really exciting stuff! We learned that the main ingredient in this new protocol, Turmeric, has extremely powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. In addition, a number of dermatological studies show that the skin has a great ability to absorb Turmeric, allowing it to reach cells beneath the surface. DDF has incorporated Turmeric into these four products for a brand new, exclusive formula!

DDF is available at places like Sephora, Ulta, Nordstrom, and on the DDF Website. The website also has information about events, and you can even submit a review and receive a discount off of your next purchase.

I am planning to try out every single one of these items (and I’ll be sure and let you know how it goes.)

Congratulations to Kristi K. and Lisa L. - the Winners of my Zannclip giveaway!

I Heart Sally Hansen

Yay! More cool stuff for summer!

I have been checking out some new colors from Sally Hansen and they are awesome! I'm pretty picky about which nail polish brands I use and Sally Hansen has some of the best formulas around. They go on well, dry beautifully and last. I always use their Salon Double Life Base & Top Coat and I've been a huge fan of their XTreme Wear colors since I discovered them last year.

And now two of their new lines have some fabulous colors for summer.

Blurb: One Stroke! One Coat! Done! One-stroke application. One-coat coverage. Dries in 60 seconds! Perfectionist Brush™ delivers a fast, flawless application that dries to a shiny finish in 60 seconds. Exclusive formula with Flexiglass Complex® for brilliant shine.

I totally love these - the new colors are bold and gorgeous! I tested out the 'Lickety Split Lime' over the weekend. The wide brush with the rounded edge makes application easy, and this formula really does dry in 60 seconds. Not only that, the finish is shiny and really long lasting. Here are the colors:

Another Weapon Against the Giant Fuzzball: Living Proof (review)

Did I ever happen to mention that summer in Philadelphia is a hot humid, hair nightmare? Perhaps I’ve observed once or twice that it gets a little damp? Well, I may have to shut up about Philly for a while because I just got back from Atlanta and am deeply humbled. Atlanta humidity is truly spectacular. Thank goodness my friends had spectacular air conditioning.

In an earlier post I described how my hair can become a little, um, “fluffy” in the humidity; so Atlanta was a great opportunity to test out the newest in no-frizz technology from Living Proof.

Blurb: Living Proof was created for the purpose of applying advanced technology to solve the toughest beauty challenges from a completely fresh perspective. We are a team of scientists from outside beauty, led by MIT Institute Professor Dr. Bob Langer, and beauty authorities with a shared vision: to invent efficient formulas based on entirely new molecules and breakthrough technologies for results you can see from across the room. We've got the perfect No Frizz solution designed specifically for your hair type and desired style.

Living Proof has gotten all kinds of praise and even won a Best of Beauty Award from Allure Magazine. Even more promising, my beauty expert friend, Nancy, recommended it. Living Proof uses no oils, no silicones, and promises to get rid of frizz. This new technology works by sealing the hair shaft to block humidity.

I tried out the wave shaping curl defining no frizz styling treatment for thick to coarse hair. I put a little more than a quarter-sized amount on my hands and worked it all through my damp hair. I let it dry naturally and it looked pretty darn good. Lots of curl definition and a little extra shine. Excellent start! Then came the real test: the Atlanta outdoors. I didn’t go jogging or anything (god forbid); but we spent plenty of time outside running errands, sitting on the patio and occasionally strolling around.

At the end of the day…zero frizz. That’s right, instead of a flat goopy mess or a giant fuzzball, I had cute curls. Freaking awesome.

Living Proof has creams, sprays and treatments for all hair types (fine, coarse, straight, curly, etc.). I recommend checking out their website. If you go to their Products page, there’s a great diagnostic tool to help you find the product for your specific needs. There’s even a video. You can also buy their products from Sephora and QVC.

Have some Awesomely LUSH Bath and Body Experiences!

I won't be posting tomorrow, so today is the official end of Bath and Body Week. And I have saved up goodies from that icon of B&B fabulousness: LUSH! Folks, they are not called "LUSH" for nothing. The website is an experience. The store is an experience. And every product is an awesome little experience. Today we’ve got two for the bath and two for after the bath.

#1: Sea Vegetable Soap

Blurb: Fun, relaxing days at the beach don't need to be a thing of the past. With Sea Vegetable soap you end up right at the ocean shore. Atlantic sea salt crystals and arame seaweed make you feel like a mermaid as you wash yourself clean with this fabulous soap. Seaweed absolute nourishes the skin and gives it a seaside scent while lavender and lime oils refresh and revive dull skin. Fresh sea ingredients like seaweeds, sea salts, and seawater for providing skin with essential minerals and nourishment. In fact, seaweed is said to be ten times richer in trace elements than plants on land, and like the several varieties used in LUSH products, all the richness is natural. So why not bring a piece of the Ocean to your bathroom with these sea inspired LUSH treats and your skin will love you for it!

This is like having the beach in a bar of soap (with the extra bonus of Seaweed Absolute). It's unusual, fabulous, vegan, and has all kinds of things to nourish your skin (even little bits of seaweed right in the bar). The combination of sea salts, lavender and lime make for a scent that’s crisp, tangy and slightly herbal. Totally reminded me of fresh air, sand, saltwater and sunshine. This would be amazing after a day at the beach – or even after a day when I should have been at the beach (which would actually be most days).

#2: Bathos Bubble Bar

Blurb: Prepare for a long night (the best kind of long night) when you bathe together in soft bubbles and the heady fragrance of jasmine and violet. Bathos leaves skin kissably soft and the scent lingers long after you've retreated to the bedroom.

Did you know that bubble bars are an original invention from LUSH? I ran the bath water (hot), crumbled one under the faucet, and my tub was FULL of gorgeous, luxurious bubbles! The water turned a beautiful lavender and the lovely fragrance lingered in the air long after my bath was done! The fragrance is very floral with a hint of spiciness (I’m guessing from the violets and jasmine) – and, yes, kind of romantic. Which is good, because the company suggests that this one is for bathing together. I agree, this is something you might consider sharing with your significant other. Or…maybe even someone who’s only sort of significant. I’m just saying.

So how about after the bath?

#3: Vanilla Delite Body Lotion

Blurb: Delightfully soothing creamy vanilla scented lotion for your body and hands. The LUSH body creams that come in black pots are thicker ones; the lighter ones, like Vanilla Delite, turn up in bottles (100% recycled of course). It's been named Delite instead of Delight as a joke, not to annoy the writing team. The important thing is that it's made with lovely light oils and butters – including Hawaiian tamanu and monoi – organic coconut water. Use it to scent and soften your skin.

I wholeheartedly agree with the blurb, only I would change it to say, “Use it to scent and soften your skin RIGHT NOW.” If you like vanilla even one teeny bit, this is exactly what you want to put on your skin. And once your skin is covered, you’ll pretty much want to walk around sniffing the bottle all day. Even though it’s light, it softens well. Although I almost wish it didn’t so I could keep applying it.

#4: Soft Coeur (The Honeymooner) Massage Bar

Blurb: Sexy sweet seduction for the skin with milk chocolate and honey. Prepare to get messy with this deliciously romantic concoction of honey, cocoa and natural melty butters, designed for warm, sensual, full-body massages. Be careful not to melt it all at once as you might want to prolong your experience for as long as possible. Make your honeymoon last forever with our best-selling, sweet Soft Coeur.

I had my co-worker (Joanna) be my guest reviewer and try this out (she is crazy about LUSH products too). Joanna told me that it smells SO deliciously chocolatey. She said it definitely softens skin, but can be a bit slippery and is best worn at bedtime (pretty good so far – I’m pretty sure that “slippery” and “bedtime” are what the makers of this had in mind). She also said that it has chocolate chunks that streak your skin brown, but the upside is that chocolate is just about the best thing you can have streaked on your skin! Go, Joanna! Someone at LUSH assured me that the chocolate streaks are entirely lickable. Whoa, man!

So if that significant (or sort of significant) other is still in the vicinity…well then. Just sayin.

Have a great weekend! ;)

Hello Italian Countryside! Simply Organic (review)

I got introduced to Simply Organic Beauty just in time for Bath Week. I've been hearing great things about them, and I'm so glad to finally check out their line!

Company Blurb: We’re committed to offering our customers the world’s finest beauty products and we continually improve our company and products in ways that produce maximum social and environmental benefits. The Simply Organic brand name has become synonymous with safety, quality, and luxury, and we are excited to continue to service the growing demand for safer beauty products that don’t sacrifice salon performance.

Ingredients Blurb: With double the antioxidants found in green tea, olive leaf extract (olea europa), is quickly becoming the "it" ingredient in natural, age defying beauty products. Exceptionally rich in antioxidants, olive leaf extract helps protect your skin from the damaging oxidation of cells that can cause your skin to age before its time. Since the first bottle of Simply Organic shampoo came off the line in 2000, Olive Leaf Extract as well as Olive Oil have been the cornerstone of our formulations. The Secret is out on Olive Leaf Extract. At Simply Organic we pledge to continue to research and develop formulations with cutting-edge ingredients, and to introduce progressive wellness information to our customers.

Their philosophy is “what you put on your hair and skin is as important as what you put in your mouth” and every package features the words "Salute" (Health) and "Bellezza" (Beauty). Reading about their ingredients (like the olive leaf extract) had me really looking forward to trying out their products. And I'm thrilled that the two bath items I tried absolutely live up to all the praise.

Hand Made Rosemary Soap

Blurb: This rosemary soap gives of a powerful, refreshing aroma to stimulate the skin and mind. Simply Organic handmade bar soaps are free of artificial colors, fragrances or preservatives. No animal products, animal by-products or testing. For the best results: Work into a rich lather with warm water. All Simply Organic soap bars are suitable for body and face.

I think this is one of the best bar soaps I've ever used! The luxurious palm, coconut and olive oil combination cleaned well, rinsed easily and made my skin baby soft. And if you like natural, herbal scents, you will be crazy for the gorgeous fresh rosemary fragrance (there are bits right in the bar). The soaps are beautifully packaged and would make fabulous gifts. I'm thinking of checking out the other two (Shea Butter and Oatmeal Lavender).

Everyday Moisturizing Body Lotion

Blurb: A rich, non-greasy lotion for healthy, vibrant skin. This everyday lotion is suited for all skin types including dry and sensitive skin. For the best results: Apply daily to entire body throughout the day and night for soft, supple moisturized skin.

This is the perfect partner for the Rosemary Soap. The delicate vanilla and orange fragrance is soft and lovely, and I could smell just a hint of it during the rest of the day. It's a great, light weight formula containing olive oil, shea butter, orange peel, vanilla and glycerin. It absorbed quickly, and the hydration really lasted.

In addition to bath and body items, there is a huge assortment of hair care products, including a cool looking Travel Kit and a Color Care Collection (which I'm planning to review). All that's missing is a DVD of Under the Tuscan Sun. Ciao!

Well Dip Me in Chocolate, Philip B!

In an earlier post during Earth Week, I talked about some amazing hair care products from Philip B® Botanical Products International. I also mentioned his awesome Chocolate Milk Body Creme. Since we're all about bath and body products this week, I decided to hearken back to Philip B. because I'm still completely smitten with the idea of anything having to do with chocolate milk.

First, I finally tried the Chocolate Milk Body Wash & Bubble Bath

Blurb: A playful and magical experience that revives the spirit of your inner child - as well as your actual child! Nurturing and skin-conditioning with the rich scent of Chocolate and Milk, Philip B®Chocolate Milk Body Wash & Bubble Bath is formulated to give you a spiritual youth jolt. Oat Proteins, Cocoa butter, Aloe and a combination of Wheat Amino Acids make anyone feel alive and 100% delicious!

Well, folks. Let me quickly tell you that this is a wonderful, soothing, cleansing wash that is great for either bath or shower. It cleans well, has excellent ingredients, and…IT SMELLS LIKE DELICIOUS CHOCOLATE MILK! And it made my shower smell like delicious chocolate milk! And if you use it as a bubble bath, you will have a tub full of delicious chocolate milk bubbles. It's great for my skin too, but frankly, all I care about is the chocolatey goodness.

Ahem, so…um…next, let's revisit the Chocolate Milk Body Creme

Blurb: We’ve had such an overwhelming response to our Chocolate Milk Body Wash & Bubble Bath that we felt compelled to make the decadent, full-sensory experience last all day. A rich, happy smell – our blend of the finest Chocolate and Vanilla Extracts made deliberately subtle and sophisticated in a crème – is backed by potent botanical hydrators like Cocoa Butter, Aloe and healing Milk Proteins. Great for kids, even better for your inner child.

This has the same amazing fragance. And like the blurb says, this is how you get the delicious experience to last all day. The scent from the Body Wash doesn't linger a lot, but the fragrance in the Body Crème does. I put it on in the morning and later in the day a few people asked me what smelled so good. All day my skin was soft and I smelled like chocolate. That equals a good day.

FYI, in case you want to share the chocolatey joy, they have a Limited-Edition Chocolate Milk Collection GIFT SET! Actually the website is full of things that look amazing. Like Chai Latte Soul & Body Wash, Thai Tea Mind & Body Wash and Cucumber & Blue Orchid Hand & Body Creme.

I’ll bathe with you any time, Philip B.!

Fresh and Sexy: My Bath with Diana B.

One of the great things about bath and body products is that there is always something new. Which means we get to choose from all kinds of amazing, gorgeous products. This week I’m focusing on things that are a little bit new or different. A perfect example is Diana B. Beauty - they really seem to be hitting the mark with their innovative approach.

Blurb: Imagine products that indulge the senses with perfume quality fragrances, extraordinary textures, hydrating and nourishing formulas that literally turn skin to silk. What began as one sugar scrub has blossomed into a beautiful line with the potential to transform your skin, formulations based in natural science, made with powerful ingredients.

For Bath Week, I tried out their heavenly Sugar Scrubs and Body Lotions in two fragrances: Green Tea Desert Grapefruit and Peach Frangipani.

First the Sugar Scrubs:
Blurb: The foundation of the BODY CARE line is the extraordinary collection of SUGAR SCRUBS, each is pure, natural, completely oil, wax and chemical free, safe to use on the most sensitive skin. DIANA B. SUGAR SCRUBS are the only products available anywhere that use cane sugar syrup and the unique use of maple syrup in lieu of oil. This last ingredient is filled with minerals and has remarkable healing properties. All fragrance combinations are unique to DIANA B.

This scrub is an outstanding treat for your skin! And it really is oil-free. (Cane sugar syrup and maple syrup are used instead of oil – whoa, man!) It’s a luxurious, invigorating scrub that left my skin polished and smooth – but with absolutely no oily residue. Not on me and not on the tub. My skin loved it and my bathroom smelled amazing for hours!

Next the Body Lotions:
Blurb: Powerfully hydrating. Luxuriously scented. DIANA B. Body Lotion will transform the look and feel of your skin. Use daily after shower or bath to renew, hydrate and beautify dry, tired skin. Enriched with marine oils, aloe vera and sugar extracts.

Again, I’m so fascinated by the use of sugar extracts in their products. This lotion is a smooth, lightweight formula that absorbs quickly (perfect for summer weather).

And…the FRAGRANCES!

I really need to sing the praises of these scents because they are to die for! The Peach Frangipani scent is beautiful and unique. It smells exactly like fresh peaches and frangipani flowers. There’s also a little hint of pepper. The total effect is feminine, sexy and exotic without being overpowering.

The Green Tea Desert Grapefruit is my favorite. I love citrus/green tea combinations and Diana B. has gotten it exactly right. It’s citrusy and fresh, but a little complex too. I want to get a candle in this scent for every room!

Diana B. also makes bath gels, face products, candles and their super famous 60-second Instant Miracle Tan. The other fragrances worth checking out are: Maple Sugar Lychee Nut, Black Fig and…Chocolate! Whoa, man!

P.S. – Don't forget to enter my Zannclip Giveaway this week!

Showering With My New Gym Buddy: Dial AntiOxidant Cranberry Body Wash

I am devoting this week entirely to yummy, wonderful bath and body products. After (or before) a hot, stressful day, there’s nothing like a luxurious bath or shower to make the world right again. And the bath is one place where there’s always room for a little extra something to make you feel pampered and soothed.

So I’m going to start off with an awesome budget-friendly bottle of summer freshness: Dial AntiOxidant Body Wash with Cranberry and Antioxidant Pearls.

Blurb: Environmental stress and drying can prematurely age your skin. Dial® AntiOxidant Body Wash helps reinforce your skin’s defense system while its moisturizing formula, infused with natural cranberry extracts, provides a healthy clean. Help reveal healthy, younger-looking skin. Cranberries are known as a natural super-fruit. Dial Body Wash with Cranberry & Antioxidant Pearls has a juicy cranberry fragrance and natural cranberry extracts. The antioxidant fortified pearls deliver a dose of good-for-you benefits with each application. Packed with moisturizers so skin feels nourished, restored and replenished.

I’ve decided to make this body wash a permanent resident in my gym bag. Since I work out in a pool, my skin really needs some TLC afterwards. I need to get the chlorine off of my skin, and I need to use a body wash with good things in it. This lathers up nicely, rises easily without any soapy residue and leaves my skin clean and balanced.

But you know why it’s really in my gym bag? The fragrance. Mmmmmm…fresh. Fresh, fresh, fuh-RESH! And fruity. I love cranberry anything and this reminds me of some kind of tropical cranberry fruit punch. After rinsing, the faintest trace of cranberry lingers on my skin.

Did I mention it smells fresh?

And how much for all this freshness? About 4.99 for an 18-ounce bottle. Really. This is also available in bar form (2.49 for a 3-bar pack). To add even more kindness to your bath budget, you can visit their website right now and get a coupon.

I also noticed another new product on their site: Yogurt Nourishing Body Wash. Nice.

New Help for your Hairdo: The Zannclip (review and GIVEAWAY)

Here in the beauty blogging universe we spend a lot of time discussing hair products (shampoo, conditioner, etc.). The thing is, once my hair is all clean, conditioned and protected from heat, weather, the environment, martians, etc., there’s still that little matter that can’t be solved with a bottle. How do I keep my clean, conditioned and protected hair up? And while I’m asking…how do I keep it from sticking out all over the place?

You too?

Well, meet my new favorite hair doodad. Meet the Zannclip.

Blurb: This ingenious spiral bendy hair clip can be used for fine hair, curly hair, thick hair--ANY type of hair. If you can wear your hair up, you can wear this clip! It's easy to use, it will not get tangled if used correctly, and it is so comfortable you can even sleep in it! AND it is plated in either 24K Gold or Platinum (or color). From casual to dressy, the ZannClip (also known as the Spyralclip) is great from morning till night. You can wear to the office, for working out, or a night on the town ... endless possibilities. Whenever you want your hair up and need it to stay up -- from 7am to 7pm it stays put! Best of all, when you decide to take your hair down, it doesn't leave that unsightly dent like so many other barrettes and elastic bands.

To begin with, the Zannclip comes in a huge variety of colors and sizes. It looks a whole lot nicer than one of those big clippie jaws of life things, and it’s really easy to fasten. There’s even a demonstration video.

Of course your big question is probably: “Maria, even though the Zannclip looks good, will it really hold my unruly hair?” Well yes indeed, it will. I put mine on before heading out to buy a swimsuit. Of course there were a million cute tops on sale that I felt obligated to try on too – which meant pulling things over my head all afternoon. And guess what? My Zannclip did not slip or budge. Instead of “Kramer* hair,” at the end of the day; my hair was neat and tidy. And when I took the clip out, there was no crease (aka “barrette head”).

More info: Zannclips are reasonably priced, durable, come in a huge variety of sizes and colors, and are 100% guaranteed. These folks stand behind their products. They offer a thirty day unconditional money-back guarantee, a sixty day exchange or a six-month repair free of charge. In addition to the Zannclip, there’s a selection of gold and platinum plated hair pins and pretty beaded French barrettes. You can buy them online or at Barneys, Henri Bendel and other fine stores.

Now the really important info: The folks who make Zannclips are partnering with me for a giveaway! 2 lucky readers will win any Zannclip of their choice: any, size, any finish, any color.

How to enter: Send an email to me at ifeelpretty@comcast.net with a comment about any of my posts (including this one). Put the title of the post in the subject line, and your comment in the body of the email. You have as many chances to win as I have posts – so enter often. Just send a separate email for each. I'll accept entries through Saturday, June 13, and I’ll email the winner on Sunday, June 14. The winner will have 72 hours to respond. If no response, I’ll move to the next randomly selected person. U.S. residents only and GOOD LUCK!

* “Kramer” was that character on Seinfeld with the weird hair. You probably knew that, though.

Help Me, LUSH! My Dad Already Has a Tie!

That's right, Fathers' Day is next week and what on earth will you do? Well the folks over at LUSH have lots of really good ideas. Which is great – because I have exactly zero really good ideas. Read some of the fabulous info I got:

LUSH knows that all too often the dads out there get overlooked when it comes to high quality grooming products. But at LUSH, we think that every man deserves to be indulged a little with products made from fresh ingredients (and may we add, haven’t been tested on animals). Perhaps this is because the founder of LUSH is a man or it’s just because at LUSH we think that everyone deserves fun and effective products. Either way, treat Dad this Father’s Day to some luxurious grooming products from LUSH – goods that promise to pick him up, perk him up and make him feel like a superhero on his special day!

Shave the Planet Gift

Wrapped with a fun comic strip made from 100% post-consumer recycled (PCR) paper, this is a great gift for the superhero in your life. The quartet of grooming products are sure to delight Dad: Shave the Planet Shaving Cream will help him get super smooth shaves, Cosmetic Lad Moisturizer soothes sensitive faces, Bamboo Soap cleanses with a light scent, plus a Business Time Massage Bar will be sure to soothe his sore muscles from a long day at the office or helping you out (also can be used as a package-free solid moisturizer – just rub directly on to skin adjusting pressure to control the oils).

Shave the Planet Shaving Cream

Trader Joe’s – Feeling Pretty at the Store

Something not available a computer near you? Am I crazy?

Believe it or not, there are things that actually have to be purchased by traveling to the actual place where they are sold. But if that actual place happens to be Trader Joe's, that's a very good thing.

Trader Joe's grocery stores are mostly on the East and West Coasts and they ROCK! They feature fabulous quality groceries at reasonable prices. TJ's is earth friendly, nutrition friendly, budget friendly and the employees are super people friendly!

So why am I featuring a grocery store on a beauty blog? Well because one of my favorite beauty products can be found right there (and only there) on the shelves: Trader Joe's Moisturizing Cream Shave (in Honey Mango).

Blurb: This unique blend of lubricating emollients maximizes absorption of water. Lifting and softening unwanted hair for effortless razor glide and reducing the risk of nicks, cuts and irritation. Enriched with pure aloe vera, nourishing vitamin E and botanical skin conditioners that help deliver a smooth and soothing shave with lasting comfort.

To begin with, the price is $3.49. You read it right - $3.49 (plus tax) for an 8oz. tube. It’s paraben free, cruelty free and 100% vegetarian. The honey and mango fragrance is heavenly (also available unscented). It’s thick, creamy and comes in a convenient flip top tube. The creaminess soothes and softens -- and also helps dissolve any anti-persperant residue. I really do get a closer shave when I use this and I don’t get soap buildup in my razor. Good for both men and women. I've tried other shave creams and I always go back to this one.

Trader Joe's also carries other bath and beauty products. Stuff like jojoba oil, tea tree oil, scrubs, bath products, haircare and skincare products. All at reasonable TJ prices.

And while you’re there, you might want to veer away from the beauty aisle for a minute and pick up a few stellar grocery products: My two favs are Organic Whole Wheat Spaghetti and frozen Turkey Meatballs. They have carrot cake cookies too. I'm just saying.

Attack of the Giant Fuzzball

Those of you who live in the desert and have stick-straight hair can pretty much ignore this post. Or you can read this and have deep, sorrowful compassion for those of us who battle…FRIZZ.

I love my curly hair. But I do not love the frizz factor that comes with it. And when summer humidity kicks in, my hair goes way beyond frizz and becomes a Giant Fuzzball.

So. Not. Pretty.

In the next few weeks, I'll be testing out some new hair products (and I'll be sure to let you know how it goes). In the meantime, I can tell you about two products that have already impressed the heck out of me.

Carol's Daughter Hair Milk

Blurb: This light, fast-absorbing lotion for the hair is made with essential oil of lemongrass to stimulate natural oil production. Vitamins C and E provide an antioxidant boost while a hint of lily of the valley fragrance perfumes hair beautifully. Hair Milk is ideal for defining natural curls and giving hair loads of shine and bounce. Lemongrass stimulates scalp circulation and adds luster to dull hair. Sweet almond oil, a natural nut oil that is high in fatty acids and easily absorbed by the scalp.

A little dab will do ya! And I mean a little! But it will definitely calm the frizzies without making your hair crunchy. I put a tiny bit (tiny!) through my hair when it starts to get puffy and my hair calms right back down. Lately I've been keeping some in my bag.

Phytospecific Integral Hair Care
Blurb: This leave-in mist replenishes moisture and detangles as it adds soft definition and light hold. It's infused with Phyto's exclusive Wood II Complex based on hordeum pulp, philodendron bark, and sandalwood bark to enhance the hair's natural protective barriers and improve elasticity. Red algae extract helps to replenish, repair, and smooth the hair shaft, while wheat protein provides protection against heat (blow-drying and hot ironing).

Love this! I spritz it on my hands and then rub through my hair in the morning. It not only softens and prevents frizz, it also helps define my curls. And it makes my hair soft instead of stiff or sticky.

Giant Fuzzball, you have met your match(es)!

From Dramatic Glamour to Subtle Shimmer

I seem to be preoccupied with my eyelids this week because I'm also going nuts over my new stila silk eye shadow wash (in "kitten").

Blurb: The best just got better! We've come up with a new way to wear stila's number one best selling kitten eye shadow. Enriched with silk proteins, this oh-so-portable water-based, liquid-to-powder shadow goes on smooth and light for flawless application. The universally flattering pink and gold tones is perfectly pretty alone or as a highlighter.

This is so pretty! It glides on with a delicate, dewey wash of color. It's shimmery and bright without looking overdone. And 8 hours later it's still there. I also got a surprise bonus: besides looking great on its own, it made an excellent primer for my powder shadows – who knew? The smooth finish made a great base and a little bit of the shimmer peeked through.

Now this is definitely the opposite of yesterday's big drama shadows. But if you want a quick fresh look, this is it.
.

It's a bird! It's a plane! No wait, it's actually a bird...

...it's EL CHEAP-O!

Breaking news from El-Cheap-o (my pretend superhero):

Bath & Body Works is having their great big humongous semi-annual sale right now. Tons of stuff at 50% and even 75% off. You can save on everything from Foam Burst to Fit Flops!

And their flagship stores are clearing out a whole lot of their luxury skincare and hair care lines now at 75% off. Lines including: 100% Pure, Ahava, Caudalie, Davies Gate, Jaqua, Jonathan Product, Lippmann Collection, Molton Brown, MOP, Mustela, Phyto and Sekkisei. Amazing!

I went yesterday and got a bunch of Phyto and Molton Brown products. I also got this snazzy re-usable water bottle for $5. Woo Hoo!

Drama, Glamour and Sparkly Fun from NARS

Hi everyone, I’m back from my trip – and so happy to not be traveling! Since I went by car this time, I didn’t have to worry about how much I could squeeze in my carry on and I totally over packed. I brought way too much stuff. It was awesome.

Speaking of awesome; I feel the need to discuss some awesome eye shadows from NARS (I know, again?) that I have been LOVING! In addition to the previously mentioned Night Rider, I have also been playing around with two other fabulous shades: Tropic (from the 09 Summer Collection) and Galapagos. Take a look:

Tropic (matte teal with silver particles)

Galapagos (rich bronze with gold flecks) The pictures never do them justice – they are way more sparkly in real life.

Besides the glamorous flecks and particles, you get bold, vivid colors. And I love them so! As eye shadows, the gorgeous, deep colors manage to be both dramatic and flattering. THEN I wet my eyeliner brush and used them to line my eyes…AMAZING! I got carried away and did a really bold line, but you could also use a thin eyeliner brush to get a more subtle effect.

Okay I just had to get that out of my system (I kept thinking about this during my long drive home). You can buy NARS on the NARS website, Sephora, beauty.com, and places like bloomingdales and Saks.

Even though I'm Gone...You Can 'stila' Read On!

Okay, so I guess all this travel preparation is making me a little goofy. Hopefully I'll be back to my normal, sane(ish) self on Monday. In the meantime…

We've definitely got our stila back and the Indian Summer 24k Gold Collection is now live on their website!

This collection is infused with luxurious, glamorous (and let's not forget sparkly!) 24k gold. I'm "eyeing" (sorry for the pun) the smudge pot eyeliner in "golden noire". Smudge pots are awesome eyeliners (I'm partial to bronze), and this new color is a matte black with 24k gold flakes. Gold! Flakes! Woo hoo!
The new charmed eye shadow palette looks pretty darn gorgeous too.
Go! Check out the sparkliness at a computer near you!

While I'm Away...Check out World Ocean's Day!

Did you know that I wrote poetry in high school? Do you really need to know that? Hmmm. Probably not.

Did you also know that next Monday (June 8) is World Ocean's Day? Now that's something you might actually want to know. I for one did not know this until I got some info (below) from La Mer. Read on and do some learnin':

La Mer and Oceana Partner to Celebrate World Oceans Day 2009
100% Net Proceeds of the Limited Edition Crème to go to Oceana
Today, La Mer and Oceana announce a special partnership to raise awareness for World Oceans Day 2009. As part of this partnership, La Mer has designed a limited-edition 250 ml “World Oceans Day” Crème, with 100% of net proceeds going to Oceana. The World Oceans Day limited edition Crème de la Mer will be sold in May and June at Saks Fifth Avenue and www.lamer.com.

Ocean conservation has always been extremely important to La Mer. By responsibly harvesting only the top section of the sea kelp that reaches the ocean’s surface, La Mer is able to help sustainably maintain the underwater sea kelp forest ecosystem and protect this marine plant for future generations.

“I used to think the biggest threat to our oceans was pollution before I met the dedicated team at Oceana,” shares Andy Bevacqua, Vice President. Research and Development, The Max Huber Research Labs and Oceana Ocean Council Member “But after spending time with Oceana scientists and on board the Oceana Ranger, I think an even bigger threat is overfishing. In the collaboration between La Mer and Oceana, I have come to understand that the only way we will get things done and make real change is if the three prongs -- the government, NGOs, and industry -- all work together. We all have a common goal.”

World Oceans Day

La Mer’s collaboration with Oceana began in 2005, and this is the second year that La Mer and Oceana have partnered to raise awareness for World Oceans Day. By creating a limited edition World Oceans Day Crème and donating 100% of its net proceeds to Oceana, La Mer helps support Oceana’s efforts to win specific and concrete policy changes to reduce pollution and prevent the irreversible collapse of fish populations, marine mammals and other sea life.

Created in 1992, World Oceans Day takes place annually on June 8th and is a day to recognize the sea’s importance as a vital ecosystem and take action to preserve its delicate habitats and wildlife. With over 300,000 members in 150 countries, Oceana’s science-based policies have greatly reduced over-fishing and protected threatened marine habitats.

Oceana Ranger Expeditions

On Oceana’s Ranger expedition, teams of divers and marine biologists gather crucial research that can be used to protect ocean habitats. Photos, videos and data collected on Ranger expeditions help gain insight into areas like fish spawning grounds that need to be protected so that fish populations can rebound and stay healthy. The Oceana Ranger studies rare corals, sea plants and underwater canyons. With the information obtained from the 2008 Ranger investigation, Oceana will be able to produce a scientific report that will be used in the proposals for the protection of marine habitats and/or marine areas.

“Recent studies suggest only one-half of 1 percent of funds going to environmental causes goes toward protecting the oceans," shares Amber Valletta, Oceana supporter and Actor. "But history teaches us that the oceans can rebound if we give them a break, which is why every dollar going to groups like Oceana can make an incredible difference."

Everything’s Coming up Roses!

I’m crazy about fragrances, but I have people in my daily life who are extremely sensitive, so I usually stick to scented bath products, lotions and body butters.

And I really love the scent of roses. Some think it’s kind of old-fashioned; but I think roses are super romantic and sexy (think of all those steamy Victorian novels). Since I don't wear perfume, I'm always on the lookout for lighter rose-scented products. Happily I came across a really gorgeous modern take on roses: Bulgarian Rose Water from Tammy Fender Holistic Skincare.

Blurb about this company: Tammy Fender formulations are living energy for the skin and based on the healing traditions of holistic medicine. A skin care collection centered on health and healing, energetically balanced to benefit one's physical, emotional and spiritual "well being". The best in luxury, the purest in ingredients. The essence of all that is wholesome, beneficial and pure. Experience the feeling. See the radiance.

Blurb about the Rose Water: Lauded by the earliest healers for its curative and beautifying attributes, Bulgarian Rose is considered the most valuable essence of all, requiring more than 7,000 petals to produce a single drop. Exquisite and pure, the rejuvenating effects of Bulgarian Rose Water strengthen and tone the delicate tissues of the skin, balancing and restoring vital chi (energy), leaving the complexion supple and revitalized. The power of rose strengthens the center of one’s emotional being ~ revealing love and beauty.

This product is for soothing and rejuvenating the skin. The directions say to apply liberally to face and neck, but all I know is that I want to bathe in this. But I've been showing restraint. Instead of bathing in it, I've been patting it on my face, neck, shoulders and arms. This truly a wonderful, high quality rosewater. The scent is soft, lovely and sooooo feminine. It's the perfect luxury to soothe your skin (or soul) on a hot summer day (or night).

Bulgarian Rose Water is part of Tammy Fender’s “balance” system. You can also check out her products to “purify,” “nourish,” “restore” and “replentish.”

Avon Skin So Soft Satin Glow (review)

I fully realize that I’m a zealot when it comes to sun protection. Probably because I’m such a recent convert. Growing up in Southern California, I had a year-round tan which I managed to boost every summer by laying out in the sun with a layer of baby oil (I know – yikes). When I lived in San Francisco, it was much colder, so my sunbathing stopped. But I still didn't think I needed sunscreen, because I didn’t burn. I didn’t even own sunscreen (again – yikes). But I found there are other "things" to worry about besides sunburn. After seeing the beginnings of brown spots on my cheeks (YIKES), I finally got all gung ho about SPF and have remained gung ho ever since.

Truthfully, I think my skin looks nice without a tan – with one exception. My impossibly ghost-white, glow-in-the-dark legs. Not only are they several shades whiter than the rest of my body, they also have some faint scars from past clumsiness. And because I wear sandals, the tops of my feet tend to be slightly darker. Weird.

I’ve been looking for something that would give a little bit of color to my legs without lots of hassle and/or expense. And among some Avon products I received a while back was yet another fine surprise: Avon SKIN SO SOFT Satin Glow Continuous Mist Airbrush Spray.

Blurb: A flawless, sunkissed glow...in just 4 days! Get a natural summer glow! 360° aerosol delivers a quick-drying mist for all over coverage—even hard-to-reach areas.

This met my needs perfectly. It’s a fine spray mist that is extremely easy to apply. It also dries very quickly (about 30 seconds). It takes a few hours for the color to show up fully, so resist the urge to overspray. I used it over 4 days and the color deepened gradually just as promised. No streaks and the shade was a very believable brown. I have it in “fair” - it also comes in “medium” (but not in “ghostly-white”). Be sure to follow the directions and use on clean, exfoliated skin (do not use after shaving). And, as with other self-tanners, be sparing around ankles, knees and elbows. I'm really happy that I can easily get natural looking color where I desperately need it.

FYI: right now, there is a bath and body sale on the Avon website (buy 1, get one for 99¢).

Make Room on the Bandwagon: The Solution (review)

I have been hearing about The Solution from Envision Beauty for a while now. After all the great reviews I finally got around to giving it a try (better late than never).

Blurb: The Solution combines the most effective ingredients from Nature + Science in one powerfully concentrated formula. The Solution’s luxurious all-in-one formula is loaded with the most effective ingredients found in Nature and Science. It powerfully nourishes, brightens and evens out the skin- repairing and preventing the signs of aging. Applied twice daily in place of a day cream, night cream, eye cream, moisturizer, anti-aging serum and pre-makeup base, The Solution rapidly produces drastic, visible results. Advanced lifting and firming action. Decreases wrinkle density and the appearance of fine lines. Improves collagen synthesis for the production of healthy and radiant skin. Powerful natural antioxidants including Goji and Acai. DMAE, Alpha Lipoic Acid, NaPCA, Hyaluronic Acid & Centella Asiatica. Vital nutrients including Vitamins A, B5, C and E. Deep-penetrating formula ideal for all skin types.

To begin with, it has a crazy amazing list of good ingredients. Envision Beauty contributes at least 10% of their proceeds to charitable projects in developing countries, and The Solution is paraben-free, alcohol-free and cruelty-free. I also love the idea of a great all-in-one product that can replace the usual rack of tubes and jars.

The formula glides on, absorbs quickly, and was just fine under my makeup. It hydrated my skin without being greasy or clogging my pores, was completely non-irritating, and even agreed with the very sensitive skin on my neck.

As for results – I am liking what I see so far. Right away I noticed a bit of un-puffing action under my eyes (thrilling!). And my skin feels great. As the package says, sometimes there’s a bit of tingling at first (not unpleasant), but afterwards my skin feels hydrated and balanced. Right before I started giving this a try; I was experiencing my usual change of seasons facial “drama.” It seemed like the “drama” cleared up quite a bit faster this time, and I can’t help but wonder if it’s due to this product. My skin certainly felt better, and I’ve been getting some nice compliments. I’ve also been using it at night and I’m waking up to balanced, hydrated skin. I have to say that I am pretty darn impressed!

I checked out the website and they are having a BOGO promotion. Nice. It also looks like they will be coming out with a brightening cleanser which is very exciting!

Bargainistas and Naturalistas: Aubrey Organics Conditioner

Thank goodness I have a blog, because I’m feeling a big need to discuss my conditioner. And if I were to just call someone on a Saturday morning and start talking about conditioner; I’m pretty sure my friends would stop answering the phone.

I'll be testing out a few new hair products so I’m going to set aside some of my usual items for a while. One of the items being set aside is my lovely and talented bottle of Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose® Moisturizing Conditioner.

Blurb: The sweet smell of success for your hair. Trade those dry, thirsty tresses for vibrant, touchably soft hair with this moisture-intensive conditioner. Restorative herbal emollients detangle and rehydrate to leave hair ultra-silky and irresistibly fragrant. Also recommended for bleached or highlighted hair.

In addition to the blurb, I am going to list the ingredients (due to their awesomeness): Coconut Fatty Acid Cream Base, Organic Aloe Vera, Organic Shea Butter, Wheat Germ Oil, Organic Jojoba Oil, Organic Rosa Mosqueta® Rose Hip Seed Oil; Extracts of Fennel, Hops, Balm Mint, Mistletoe, Camomile, Yarrow, Chrysanthemum, Angelica, Forsythia and Magnolia; Honeysuckle Oil, Carrot Oil, Aubrey’s Preservative (Citrus Seed Extract, Vitamins A, C and E).

Bargainistas: It’s reasonably priced and a little bit goes a long, long way.

Naturalistas: every damn thing in the bottle is good for your hair and the earth. No parabens, no petrochemicals, no animal testing and the packaging is biodegradable and recyclable.

Non-istas: I've been using this almost daily and it's made my hair smooth, shiny and soft. It detangles. It moisturizes and protects. And even though it’s super rich, thick and creamy, there’s almost no buildup. And I love the honeysuckle fragrance – it’s strong out of the bottle, but leaves a mere hint after rinsing.

I also recommend you check out their website and take a look at the other stellar products they offer. There’s haircare, skincare, beauty, bath & body, household products, books…and products for pet care (big awesomeness points). You can also find their products at places like Whole Foods.
